Unkown oil tank

Hello, i got myself an 1984 e30 318i and the first thing i noticed is that strange tank in the engine compartment. it as electrical cables and a tube connected to the dipstick tube.





The tank came with engine oil inside. I dont know what it is and i cant find information anywhere.

Does anyone know what is it?

The engine seems to be running normal although i think the valves are a bit dry. Is my oil pump broken or what?

Its an automatic oil top up

If the valves were dry the engine wouldn't last very long, 10 mins maybe 20 as its a good old M10
