Ok basically i'm on my second m52 ( first one an intake valve stuck), the cooling system worked fine and the fan kicked on at the half way point.

Now i'm using another m52 which came from an e36 donor car i used for a few months and everything was working fine.

Now it's in my E30 the fan will not kick on until the 3 quarter mark, top and bottom hoses are getting warm, i'm using:

80/88 switch with both low and high wires plumbed in on a single speed.
Electric Fan.
88 stat.
Mishimoto rad with e30 expansion bottle ( was using standard e36 Rad as i was with my previous engine)

Point to note: my top hose blew off the other day, car got hotter than normal but not into red! ( Not sure if this was from a loose clamp or another reason, when i put the clamp back on it took a few more turns to get it tight)

Seriously at my wits end with these engines, since doing an m52 conversion all i've had is problem after problem! Why on earth isn't the fan kicking on until it's too late?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had a similar issue. It was driving me nuts and making me really nervous sitting at the lights waiting for it to kick in. I had a rad blow up as well at 65mph. I think it was blocked though as it hasn't done it since I replaced it.

My little get around for piece of mind was to fit an override switch in the centre console. That way you can turn it off or on whenever and test the loom if you're wondering about relays breaking and what not... It's nice and easy to do as well but if you've done an m52 swap this little bit of wiring is easy. :)

Is the fan and fan switch setup the same as it was previously? In my car, the low speed (80 degree at the fan switch) kicks in just after half-way. The high-speed (88 degree at the switch) should kick in at just before 3/4 (tested) but it's never gotten this hot in normal use as the low speed is sufficient to do the job.

Is it possible that in wiring to a single speed that it's all being switched at 88 degrees?

Which rad is it? Mishimoto are not premium brand products like their adverts like to pretend they are, they are just cheap chinese made rads with a name stamped in

Either way it sounds like the fan is not cutting in at 80 degrees, this would also depend on the position of the fan switch which may be different if you are now using a different rad?
An M52 cooling system is very reliable when setup properly, an 88 stat is too hot for my liking especially as there is no viscous fan in an E30 conversion
