Interesting point if using an e38 728i sump.

Hi all.

Bough my m52 engine complete with what I thought to be an e34 m50 front hanging sump. I always figured I'd been given the incorrect dipstick with it as the oil level would read over the full mark so I measured out exactly 6.5ltrs by the jug and marked a new 'full' line on the stick.

It's bugged me for ages and I've not actually used the car since building it yet, I looked into it further and noticed a date stamp of 1997 on the sump but no visible part number. The part number on the level sensor fitted comes up as either e39 or e38 M52! So I assume now I have a 728i sump.

After quite a bit of searching about the 728 only holds 5.8ltrs of oil!

Worth noting if anybody picks up the same sump.

The only difference that I know of with the sumps is the hole that the dipstick goes through.
The difference between an oil change and oil capacity in an M52 is approx half a litre BTW, so I would always use the correct dipstick and tube as reference rather than measuring what your putting in

Hi, does this mean that a 728i sump is suitable when transplanting an M52 into an E30? Any clearance issues? I'm planning a 728i (M52TUB28) conversion into an E30 so any info you have would be much appreciated!
