I have a manual roof on my '89 cabbie.

When you lift the horse shoe cover to put the roof up/down, should it stay up on it's own?

There looks like there are some little strut thingies, are these meant to hold it up, like the ones on the boot lid?

If this is the case, are they still available ?

The flap should stay up, you are correct.
Those little struts do the job.
I got replacement ones from ebay from a company in Germany, they have been on there 6 years and they are still good.
I wouldn't recommend getting second hand ones.

Correct replacement struts are available from BMW, or you can buy aftermarket ones for a much lower price, but be careful to order the correct strength in Nm.
The cheapskate, but equally effective cure, is to fit a single strut from a second hand E30 front seat.

Thanks for the info guys.

Hi Brian, do you know what the correct Nm they should be?

labrat, I've found some on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E30-Conve ... RG7tEXff-Q
which are £40 + p&p from Germany.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Look on the Stabilus website for Required strut part number (Stabilus are the OEM for BMW). Then google the part number. I recently bought 2 from a German company on eBay, can't remember the name sorry. They were £30 quid each. identical ones from BMW were £60.

I found the German eBay seller for these parts, name is mks-autoteile.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/mks-autoteile ... 7675.l2559

They were £17 (€20) each. They have a drop down menu for the correct part. Arrived boxed in original Stabilus packaging in about 5 days. Highly recommend them.

I've tried your link but it's making no sense to me because of the language barrier, any chance you could post up a part number or a direct link to the item ?
