So the radio is now staying on when I take the keys out,
Ive found that if I push the hazard switch half way in the radio turns off.
Will a new hazard switch fix the problem, or is the problem deeper?

I'd guess that someone has used the permanent 12v live from the hazard warning light switch to power the stereo. ...a fairly common bodge with aftermarket stereos. ...some people like the stereo to work with ignition off...
The original wiring should still be in there ? Just do a quick search for e30 stereo wiring on Google and put it right..

That certainly sounds plausible. I guess if someone has done exactly that in the past, the hazard switch is getting a lot more use than it should, maybe something in the switch / wiring has recently given up.
Will rip out the radio and see what gremlins are hiding back there.
