Lamda??

I have a 1988 325i cabby. As above mine doesn't have a cat converter - but does it have a lambda sensor?

Then someone will have removed the cat. at some point. The purpose of a lambda sensor is to protect a cat. You should also have a carbon canister in the fuel tank vent. line cluttering up the under bonnet area.

Where's the lambda sensor fitted? It fits into the cat. on M40 engined cars, and I think oit does on M20s as well.

The lambda fits into the down pipe on M20 cars.

To see if it has one fitted check for a wire running from a plug under the battery tray to the down pipe.
