Was looking to do an oil change on the e30 and the oil filter will not budge for anything, my brothers mk2 had the same issue and last resort of screwdrivering it came off. but the 325i is not having it at all and I feel stuck, what shall i use is the cap wrench a good option?? i dont know what to do...

have you tried tapping round the rim with a small a small hammer??

or a wrench that looks like a bike chain?

tried the chain wrench andno luck at all it even snapped a screwdriver, i dont know now will the cap wrench work you reckon?

cap wrench should work, though i've never tried one, always used a thick "mechanics" screwdriver to puncture the filter right the way through & IIRC it goes down towards the ground.

i Have been going down wards and it even snapped a screwdriver. I could tell this one was abnormally put on so tight because generally i have had no issue, this one is a bugger to remove...what do if i cant get it off?

it could be cross threaded, if it's stuck solid then all i can suggest is going down the local garage.

They always undo anti-clockwise.

Perhaps try heating the base with a blowlamp, taking care not to set fire to anything - have a fire extinguisher close at hand!

Chain wrench is usually best on oil filters - stabbing a screwdriver through them works in many cases but is usually very messy.

You may find you need to hack away the body of the filter, then ease the base of the filter away from the block using a suitable lever, etc., but taking care not to gouge the block surface. Perhaps use Mole grips or similar to pull the base metal of the filter away from the block, then try to twist out the remains, or tap the base of the filter around with a hammer and chisel, again taking care not to gouge the block.

litrally bought one just now but it keeps slipping, i cant obviously put any oil in until i get this off which looks like i have to get it to a garage on a flat bed, i think even from underneath I cant get the leverage, ...lets see hopefully a fairy will take it off in the middle of the night

Wipe the housing completely clean of oil, use degreaser.
Then Try putting a rubber glove over the filter then put the strap wrench over the top to give it some purchase

Only two pipes and a single bolt to remove the whole assembly from the block, but I can't see how you're having this much trouble.
It's certainly not corroded on, and the cross thread is unlikely IMHO, so it's only the friction between the rubber seal and the housing that's stopping it unscrewing.

Think I know what this means, but having a look at the pics on this link for how to change an e30 325 oil filter, it's up

My E30 long gone but all canister type filters are removed by turning anti clockwise, looking at the end of the filter

Are you definitely sure you are turning it the right way?

Hi well I managed to get the blimin thing off !!!cheers!!! with a new lease of life and sheer determination and slightly adaptation to get more leverage ...i finally did it, thanks to the rubber glove under the belt wrench jobby...thanks to Capri Rob!! cheers pal...it made a crack noise so must of litrally bonded it self but the whole can of Wd40 must of helped a bit....i was always going the right way but started doubting it as this was not budging for nothing....but thanks guys ...we sometimes get to a point where we dont want to be told haha..but the marigolds did a cracking job . now I can fill it with oil and go for a spin
