Pulling the head off my m30 to replace a broken rocker arm. Might as well clean it all up while I am at it.
Anyone have any tips for cleaning the carbon deposits off? Particularly exhaust ports?
Thanks
Ross

Paint thinners is good at breaking down the carbon, don't use brake cleaner. Go at it with a wire brush in a drill, this will get rid of most of the build up. The head will need skimming if you do the chambers.
I soda blast heads it gets rid of all the deposits and is quick. Manually cleaning will take a while.
If you use thinners, do it outside to avoid

Cheers will get it soaking.
I always get heads cleaned up with a light skim before putting them back on so may as well do the chambers.
We had a tank with God knows what in it in the garage I used to work in. Leaving a head in over night and a pressure wash would leave it looking like new
