just wondering,,, with a heavy sound system or something,, how will it effect say a 318is,, and also how will it effect a 320 touring... other then being obviously slower, does the 318is have enough torque to pull along say 80kgs in the boot??

i am a car audio enthusiast ;)

As said above thats like having another person in the car but after a while the way it goes will become the norm. If your into your sounds that much its just the price you have to pay for having what must be volcanick bass with that much wieght ! (couldnt hurt with it being over the axle, bit more rear end grip !)

this was in the back of my golf... have sold the sub and box,,, the sub and box together wieght approx 65-75 kgs alone.. the next sub is about same wieght as this one,, 3 kgs heavier i think.. and the next box is 2cuft bigger,,, so will be quite alot heavier,, realistically looking at 100kgs in the boot...

though what will cope better,,, the revvy 318is,, or the grunt of a 6pot 320?

Yeah it will help you get more grip when pulling away but then has the reverse effect in that it will slow you down.
When you throw it into a corner the back end will want to carry on in a straight line  I've got a little fiesta van and with the weight of an M20 block in the back it changes the way the thing drives completly depending where the thing is situated.

As for the 4k rev thing you will always get there it just depends how quick you want to get there and how deaf you'll be when you do.

my god what the hell did you make that sub box out of? 1ft thick mdf?? lined with lead?

or maybe the magnet for that sub fills 1/4 of the box...either way OMG 65-75kg?!

i have 2 of these: http://www.jbl.com/car/products/product ... ion=EUROPE

sitting here (had them for 2 years+, never installed them - dave h will laugh at that!) and i just checked, they weigh 9kg each!

they aren't the biggest subs in the world by far (they are JBL's top subs though), but they are 600WRMS/3000W peak each, so pretty meaty!

if the weight of that box/sub is down to the sub, it must have cost you the best part of Ԛ£5k, or more, i would think... :?

i honestly hope you aren't just guestimating the weight cos just from here, it looks nowhere near 65-75kg...no offence! 8)

nope the sub alone wieghts 28ish kgs...
and the box wieghs more....

the baffle is 36mm MDF the rest of the box is 18mm mdf,,, and its capacity is 4.5 cuft, 37"x19"x14.5" ..... the box wieghed more then the sub,, hence 65ish+ kgs.

it was enough to lower my mk2 golf by 50mm

its retailing price is approx 500Ԛ£ i got it second hand though. :)

its a sub with a specified rms of 1000 watts,,, however as long as a unclipped signal is sent it can take anything up to 3500 on a daily basis, with a max of approx 5000i think...

and i can think of many many subs bigger then your jbl ;) though it is a prtty good sub,,,,,, just a word of advice before you install... your sub is only as good as your box.... if you need a hand with a good box design let me know :) otherwise it will be wasted money

anyway conclusion, i tyhink i can live with a bit less speed considering speed is what got me where i am today

what actual sub is it then? have you got any pics, cos i've seen a lot of subs - i know there are loads bigger than the JBL's, lol - but the magnet must be insane for it to weigh 28kg! and Ԛ£500 is amazing - my 10" jbl's when i bought them, retailed for Ԛ£400 EACH :o

i'm ok with the box tho thanks, lol, i've done a lot of research into these (or had), but the reason they haven't been installed is cos i got bored of audio, and i don't want to weigh my car down by the 25-30kg it will take to install those subs...i will someday though when i have a suitable car which just isn't fast!

i have all the stuff for the setup for the subs, themselves, i bought a load of 2 gauge, circuit breakers (instead of fuses), a big amp...then just couldn't be bothered...lol

i thought about selling the stuff, but i can't bear to without hearing this at least once :P

Spose your right, but when i go out for a drive in the e30, living in cornwall, the roads are pretty empty and this causes a common illness called lead foot itus. Especially as most of the roads are twisty b roads.... The fun is endless winkeye :D 8)

the boot is more then enough to house a 15" in a 6 cu ft enclosure,,, giving some dirty low bass,,,

i remember measuring 39x39 as the floor plan,,, if you go 8 inches high u get external colume of 6.1 cu ft iirc,, might be wrong its of top of my head,, u have enough room for 14 inches,,, however i would say no more then 10/11 inmches high as you need to allow the sub some space.. especially with high power

you only really need 4.5cu ft though to have a really good enclosure for a 15" sub,, 6 cu ft will suit two 12s well for dirty bass,

will get some pics of the sub out of the box winkeye its a beast :D

was used in one of the loudest vans in the uk  Utopia Van,, do a search ;)

sub will be facing upwards,,, towards the boot lid/parcelshelf/roof.

side to side is 39"
hieght is approx say 8" (up to 10 though will be hard to put in boot due to angle...)
and depth can be anything up to 39" again,,

using 39x39x10 that is 15210 cu inches,, thats aproc 8.1 cu ft...

these are external volumes.... so taking into account wood, sub, port, i sould say you should have 6-6.5cu ft, at max.. for a 15 to get down low you really need 4.-4.5 cu ft. the same can be clamped to the side of the box, or to the side of the boot if you put a wooden wall.. and have enough space.. i am certain you can get atleast 4. cu ft easily.. using one 15" sub.

this will mean u will loose FULL boot space however,,, no access to spare wheel, etc.. but as you can see from my mk2 golf.. i had no space AT ALL! the amps were mounted underneath the box whih was raised

however i do remember that the depth of the boot is 39inches however that only includes some of the angle of the seat rear,, so its mor erealistic to place a value of 30 but non the less you get my drift :)

if also your sub is deeper then the 10 inches given,, you could mount the sub upside down, but may mean you have to have a lower box,,, say 6-8inches high to allow for the magnet,,,

i will show you my progress pics.,... once i get my new car,, and sub lol :)

what make/model is the sub? or did i miss that? i know you've said how much it weighs, but looking at the equivalent 15" JBL:

Image

The magnet looks just as big (that whole finned bit at the bottom, you can kinda see the magnet "inside" it - it's less wide, but deeper). I'd estimate the JBL was 12kg if the 10" i have is 9kg...not doubting how powerful it is, just how much it weighs - and that can only be good for you :D

dude, you should join talkaudio.co.uk just join and ask about your sub vs the RE XXX ;) ull get some interesting answers i assure you :)

haha, i wasn't proclaiming the subs i have were the most powerful, in fact i've said otherwise all along, i am just using it as a benchmark cos it confuses me why your sub was so heavy, lol!

if i wanted to say that, i'd just go out and spunk a few k on a 5000WRMS sub or something lol - and an amp (and nuclear power station!) to go with it :P

those RE subs look quite meaty, they don't have much info on their power-handling capabilities though - which is the better from the XXX and the MT?

the MT is more SPL sub,, so it plays loader and harder with RMS of 2000 (but RMS figures mean jack shit with high quality subs,,, thy can take LOADS more as long as its a good quality amp giving a good clean signal)

the XXX is rated at 1600 watts rms,, iirc,, though its very very common for people to give it 3000 watts rms and not have any problems what so ever,, again dependant on amp :)

the XXX uses XBL^2 technology, and this is basically what differentiates it from the other subs,,, this sub can is very vry musical, it has excellent sound quality as well as getting loud,,,

comparing the pbx vs xxx, they both are similary loud,, some say pbx louder,, but it all depends on box and power supply... however the xxx whoops on the SQ side of things. hence why ive sold my pbx,, and now going XXX, same power output,,, more SQ :)

and i believe the XXX is 1 kg heavier then the pbx,, lol 30kg subs is not a uncommon thing
http://www.hexibase.com/ttb/vid11.wmv
thats a vid of the soundstream xxx (not related to RE xxx lol) just look at the size of that mofo.

haha, well yeah originally, then the z3, then i couldn't be bothered with that either! could put them in the polo :o but i was planning a proper boot build (maybe fibreglass as i've worked with it a bit now)...

thing is, i won't want to put them in my next car if i'm getting it for speed...however that's one of the things that these may be ok for, maybe they are just peculiarly light for their power/size cos @ 9kg each i probably wouldn't care...say a total of 30-40kg for the whole install...i'd be happy!

9 kgs is normal about right tbh, 13kgs and u can get the RE SE which is RMS at 1000 watts, though takes a heck of a lot more :)
