Hi all,

I'm trying to find some spray paint to redo my engine bay while the engine is out (mostly non-visible bits, like the inside of the radiator surround etc., but also the front chassis members too. The body shop did the suspension turrets/surrounding area, but nothing lower).

The paint code is 184 (delphin grey, 1989). Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy it from? The colour match doesn't have to be 100%, but as close as possible.

I've put a base coat of BMW sparkling graphite down already (as Halfords had it in, and it's a cheap way to build up the layers, and I know it's a close-ish match), and that's fairly similar, but not close enough to leave that exposed.

There's a few on eBay, but any personal experiences are welcome... If not, I'll just take a punt and see...

Cheers! :)
Joe

Most motor factors that sell paint will make up aerosol cans of any colour you want.
The paint in these goes much further than the equivalent size can sold in the DIY market.

Good tip - thanks.

The Halfords can I used was enough for two coats, so another two + lacquer should be OK for a non-contact area (no stone chips or anything).

My local Halfords do paint mixing, so given the engine bay is holding refitting the engine back, I'll likely take a trip down and see if they're any good or not. Reviews on Google seem mixed regarding colour match, but their paint has proved decent quality beforehand, so it's worth a try.

Local Motor Factors as per Brian's advice.

BMW sell it but its £££££. I purchased one of their touch-up kits recently in Delphin and it was a really poor match - far too dark. Saying that, a rattle can I bought years ago was perfect.

I went to Halfords in the end. The guy there was one of the old-school people (he's helped me before). It came in a 300ml Holts can, and so far it's done two coats of the engine bay/underside of the chassis rails and feels about 2/3 depleted. I'll see what the colour match is like during the week when I visit it next, but once it had gone 'tacky', it looked pretty accurate.

£15 a can in the end, and it's one of those sprays with the nice nozzles too, rather than the standard ones which seem to drip a bit more.

I use http://www.paints4u.com/aboutus.aspx. Also consider buying a handle adapter for the top of the gun. Makes bigger jobs easy.
