No. I know what people think about these engines. Some like some hate .just want to keep this engine to see what I can do and get out of her. Don't want to do another engine swap

Dale used them, but hasn't been on here for about 10 years though.

Dbilas TB will not add a single pony to any engine.Siggo wrote:No. I know what people think about these engines. Some like some hate .just want to keep this engine to see what I can do and get out of her. Don't want to do another engine swap
Personally I'd still buy them, rare morsel and eye candy.

Boosted and throttle bodies? Save yourself a lot of hassle for no gains and leave the stock inlet on

You can make it work, and work well, but the time and money spent would see much bigger better things from using another engine to start with or going for better turbo bits.
1K is enough for rods and pistons for some engines or you could use that cash to ditch the M40 for an M44 and start with a 16v 1.9 engine.

He got it up and running, but I don't think it was ever running very well. Stripped the car in the as the shell was crap and he was moving from Leics up to Sheffield.steve_k wrote: thats what i meant, did he ever finish it?? i remember reading about it in PPC a few years ago.
Staley has got it running, and very well, but then from looking at build pics he's spent a lot of £££££ on it.

Just concentrate on getting it running spot on, wasting your money trying to add performance to an M40. Once that's done look at chassis mods instead!Siggo wrote:Ok thanks . Would like to keep engine if I can and do the best with it

Toby came to a dyno day i organised at Evolve back in 2007 with the turbo'd ITB'd M30 and it made the most power on the day until Karan came with his S38B36 turd right toward the end of the day.Kedge wrote:He got it up and running, but I don't think it was ever running very well. Really don't understand the insistence on keeping the M40. The cost of doing all that work to an M40 isn't going to be significantly less than doing it to, say an M42 or M44 but the end result would be far superior - and dropping an SR20 in could probably be done for less. If I'm spending lots of money I'd want the best possible results for it! If you got two identical quotes to have your drive tarmacced; one from the local travelling contingent and one from a reputable pro; surely you'd choose the pro?

I know it did make good power, just thought he was never fully happy with how it ran, although I remember Ant did go up and spend a day tuning the MS so might have been a lot better after that. Good effort for something built on the side of the roadbss325i wrote:Toby came to a dyno day i organised at Evolve back in 2007 with the turbo'd ITB'd M30 and it made the most power on the day until Karan came with his S38B36 turd right toward the end of the day.Kedge wrote:He got it up and running, but I don't think it was ever running very well. Ah, sorry, long day, must have missed that.
Still, white elephant or not, I'd still have Dbilas for aesthetics.
Not that ITB'ing is a cheap 'bolt on' to begin with.

We have a 318i cab and wanted a bit more poke as we found we had to constantly move out of the way of faster traffic on motorways, although smooth and reliable the M40 was, i realised it would be a waste of time trying to get more from it and fitted a complete M42 engine, gearbox & prop. Night & day improvement, excellent reliability, original looking engine bay, 16V & no complications, win win!

dbilas is good for bling and nothing else. the way their manifolds attach to the head and the chosen runner geometry kills any chance for sucess

Unless restricted by competition regs it does look pointless to start with the M40.Motorhole wrote:Really don't understand the insistence on keeping the M40.
Say the OP fitted the ITBs, reworked the head, fitted custom cam shaft and exhaust, possibly even needing a bigger rad to deal with the extra cooling, then spent hours on the dyno to get everything running perfectly and upped the power output by 25% what would he have?
About what an M42 makes but without the reliability.
