I'd expect to pay £500 give or take. However they seem to be going up in value.
An E46 M3 gearbox will fit though, and can be had for around the same.

I suppose what choice does he have, they can't be rebuilt so hes going to have to take the gamble.DanThe wrote:Its a gamble buying one nowadays!
Id for for one from an e46, both are like chocolate anyway.

Like chocolate? I've heard the opposite? It's usually baggy detent springs the give poor stick feel or the syncros that wear out, and only on big mileage, abused examples.
Also, they can be rebuilt but it's a specialist job.

my e36 6 speed is fine with unknown milege. I took it out of a rear end damaged evo cab locally for £125 with propshaft with i was told about 130k on it. I've renewed all the linkage parts and changed the oil a couple of times in my e36 and put 40,000 miles on it. It very very occasionally won't fully engage in first but thats it. I think the reputation is a bit internet based and they aren't as bad as made out imo
My M5 uses the same box and is soldering on
the 5 speeds are slicker on operation but i'll take the extra cog and relaxed motorway legs/mpg

I think the bad rep actually comes from people who use the cars on track. See a lot of track cars having broken 6 speeds swapped to 5 speeds

It's the input & layshaft bearings that give these boxes a bad name because of the chatter that many suffer.
E36 boxes were £500 10yrs ago, I doubt you'd find a decent one now.
Si you had a result at £125 and I expect the whiney diff drones out the box !!??

Who can rebuild them? I've yet to hear of anyone taking on the job.M3Pete wrote:Like chocolate? I've heard the opposite? It's usually baggy detent springs the give poor stick feel or the syncros that wear out, and only on big mileage, abused examples.
