Can anyone recommend a good brand of CCTV that either they have or know that is good?

I'm looking on eBay and the prices seem too good to be true, and when you feel like that it's normally true.. which makes me wonder if I would be wasting my money on an inadequate system. .

So I wanted to ask if anyone has CCTV installed at their house and if so what do you have and whats the picture quality like?

Thanks in advance!

Swann is generally reckoned to be the market leader at the non professional end of the market.
Resolution is everything when it comes to CCTV, alongside decent low light performance if you want it to watch over a car in the dark.

I've got a cheap siri cam cctv front & rear, dirt cheap on ebay, cost me about £50 for the pair, they work on wifi.

Picture quality is pretty good even at night (even without the two 500w floodlights).

Once set up on the pc load up the app on your phone & check it where ever you are.

Also got a motion detector hidden in the garden linked to the cameras & lights.

thanks for the reply guys!

I've been doing a bit of research this morning and the main thing I've read is that you should be looking at Megapixels as oppose to TVL (tv lines) as that's old technology now.

The internet can be annoying sometimes as there's TOO MUCH choice!

a big part also comes down to budget, you get what you pay for.

the set up i've got was given to me by a mate of the family who builds & installs these systems for a living so i got it at cost price :D

the cameras are both 1080p HD crystal clear even at night, the motion sensors (there's a few of them winkeye) are hidden all over, even got a hidden camera in the shed aswell as alarms on the windows & doors on the house.

only went as far as i did due to the fact that a few months ago next door cought some one prowling round my yard & scared them off (you want to see her  enough to scare anyone off 8O ) & it took the police over a week to come out to see me.

:chuckle: Lucky she was there mate!

Your mate doesn't have any more kits knocking around at cost price does he?

The way I see it "buy cheap buy twice" and when it comes to home/ car security how can you put a price on that? :thumb:

if i see him i'll have a word,

like you say good job she was there.

it all depends on the system, i've seen some that cost £30 all in that do a fantastic job.

aldi a while back were doing cctv & motion detectors pretty cheap & i know a few folk who bought them after there had been a double murder in town just to (try & be) on the safe side.

have a word with the local police crime prevention officer as they might know where to get a good set up at a decent price (well it is part of their job).

Thanks mate :thumb:

I'm considering this kit as it's around what I would want to pay for all the features and from the video's I'm seeing looks like good quality! (I looked at the swann kits brian but they are double the price!)

that looks pretty good to me, main thing i'd look for is if you can "build" the system, ass to it when ever you want.

I think I'd be looking at an 8channel box for that so you could add cameras later but I think 4 cameras is enough for me.

I have 2 Swann systems installed and have the app on my phone so I can view them from anywhere.

Ignore the Impreza, it was served on at a nice profit and is replaced by another e30 :)

Night performance could be boosted with an infrared spotlight but it's more than clear enough in the inside garage as it is, and the lights in the undercroft are automatic anyway

I'm just looking to remove my 4 camera swann setup as I've moved to a bigger pproperty and need a better quality camera set up, looking at £350ish for a hikvision 1080p set up with 4 cameras off eBay which should give 2/3weeks recording with a 2TB HD.

My swann set up was good though, police are using the footage from the front two 720 tvl cameras this week after they caught a break across the road, so still a reasonable quality without going for 1080p stuff.

A mate of mine got fed up with the mirrors of his E36 M3 being stolen outside his house, as he owned a security company he installed state of the art CCTV and got crystal clear pictures of a man with a cloth cap pulled down low removing his mirrors in seconds. No part of his face was visible.

The problem is if the cameras are hidden they may enable the police to catch the thieves, but that may not help get your property back. To deter the theft, the cameras need to be obvious, then they can probably be avoided.

Thanks for the input guys! :D

Ross_jsy - The swann systems do look good as previously brought up by brianmoore, just not sure I could afford to pay double what I could get a Hikvision system for that essentially does the same thing.

and I bet you miss that Impreza 8) :snigger:

Magpie - I was looking on amazon for the hikvision I put up earlier and ebay seems to be better priced!

appletree - check the link I put up mate 1080p for 4 cameras and 2tb comes in at £260 :thumb:

ChrisHC - As with any thief situation if they are good they won't come onto your property obviously but its more for safety of my family as well.
I watched a video recently of someone posing as a gas meter reader and forcing his way past an elderly woman. I will mount 2 in obvious locations to show these scumbags that they are being recorded and 2 in discreet places so they won't know they are being recorded from that angle 8)

My neighbour installs them so I got them at cost price.

And I do miss it! Cost me £1k, I did an oil and filter and it provided me with a year of cost free, rapid motoring and sold on for £1,500. Can't be unhappy with that!

Best way is to find somebody that installs them as they will know whats available and usually get them at the best price, I had a chap come and fit 4 cameras at work, I helped out by running the cables etc and he charged me £400. Ive got an app on my phone so I can check up anytime and it also alerts me if an inside camera starts recording.
He told me he buys everything off Amazon at bulk discount prices. Finding someone that charges a fair price is usually the hard part though

Ok guys after two solid days of research (which was starting to do my nut in  ) I've finally ordered this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/swann-dvr8-46 ... eras-a17ur

4 cameras 1080p HD with an 8 channel DVR so I always have the option of 4 more cameras in the future! 2tb harddrive. . Smartphone/ tablet support and alerts, motion detecting the lot!

Excellent value for money for what It comes with and only £50 more than the hikvision kit I was looking at but much better specs!

From what I'm reading the general opinion from here and on the net is that Swann is the kit to have!

I'll update again after I set it up 8)

Thanks for the advice guys! much appreciated as always! :thumb:

You need an infra red floodlight for the cameras, rather than visible, if you want to get pics. Once a visible light floodlight switches on, they'll be gone.

I havent fitted it yet but I did hook it up to check the quality of picture and it is amazing mate!

Plus it being an 8 channel you have the option to add more cameras later so its a win win :thumb:

I would ring Technomate in Edmonton http://www.technomate.com/categories/Pr ... y/Cameras/ I have four of their cameras fitted to my house with a DVR.

I had never fitted any kind of CCTV before i bought some Cat5e, RJ45 Crimps and, crimping tool it was really reasonable and pretty straightforward to fit and set up it comes with streaming app too.

It's commercial quality stuff.
