The time to sort the roof out is now! If it hasn't rusted through and began to bubble, any rust can be dealt with and the area painted. This will not be a minor job, though, and will need the headlining removed to see exactly the extent of the damage.
Depending on what is found, the sunroof cassette may need to be removed and either repaired or replaced, before being refitted and resealed properly.
Are you seeing rusted metal with the roof off, or just flakes of rust lying in the channels? The area where the sunroof mounting tabs join the panel will almost certainly be rusty to some degree, but sorting this out, or replacing the panel is a relatively simple procedure.

I think the roof has had a paint job.. with the sunroof open you can see a bit of corrosion.. looking through the stacks of paper work it had service etc at munich legends in 2014, they did a report on car which said roof corroded needs replacing..so i think its been patched up before..did fone today with reg etc and got to fone back wednesday , the guy that dealt with it is back then..just thought its a bit drastic cutting roof off and replacing roof off a donor car.from the outside car looks mint.. just this paper work and bit of crud in runners is a concern.. in answer to your question odd flake in channel like small bit of conflake

If ML have already said it needs a roof and now it has fresh paint, then run a mile, unless it's priced a minimum of £2k below its otherwise market value.
Fellow team member on here, bss325i works a ML, so you could ask him to do some research for you.

flakes of loose rust in the channels will probably have come from the metal sunroof panel itself, it rusts internally over the years and the resulting debris ends up dropping into the runner-channels.

Ok thanks for that.. looks stunning apart from that took for test drive and puls like a train .. few other jobs he said he would sort out . which were
wipers on lights not working
seal on sunroof perished a bit .. hence flake in runner
when engine is ticking over i could hear a constant hum from somewhere.. might not be nothing but my old sport was quiet im sure of that..
electic passenger window not working
everything else works..
he did say he would get his bodyshop to sort out flakey runners but i think he doesnt realise what that entails.. looks like i need to knock him down a bit ..
we have a very good classic car restorers in newmarket thinking maybe they could strip roof down at some point and sort it out without the need of replacing roof .. its on the london surrey cars ltd website..

The output shafts will be seized. Doesn't normally damage anything, and a complete strip down, grease and reassembly will usually provide a complete cure.

Condition of sunroof is nothing to do with the seal. The seal is to stop wind noise, and is not intended to keep all water out. Water that gets past the seal is dealt with by fixed and sliding gutters and drainage tubes.

Not sure on this one, but worst case is a collapsed timing belt idler, throwing the belt against the front of the timing cover. It will eventually wear away and fail, so needs checking.

electic passenger window not working
Switch. Swap with other switch to check. Easily stripped, cleaned and reassembled.

everything else works..

Depends if he means sort properly or sort long enough for the cheque to clear. Never a good idea to have a seller do work that needs doing.
