Hello all,

I've part-owned this E30 for a number of years and, due to a slight rearrangement of ownership, it is now a joint project between myself and Soap Grenade Detailing, based just down the road from me.

It's a bog standard E30 316i Touring, 109k on the clock, and no service history. It's been off the road since 2008 but, if the sticker on the engine is anything to go by, was serviced just before it came off the road. It passed its last MOT too, which is never a bad sign.

Since then it's lived in a friend's yard before being moved to his lock-up. It all looks nice and solid - in fact I'd put money on it going through an MOT as is, although the rear beam and front wishbone bushes have seen better days.

It's also currently a non-runner. It was recently given a new fuel pump and relay but still isn't getting any fuel through - I whipped the pump out and tested it and it seemed a bit lackluster, so will clean it out next time I have a day to crack on with the car. Cranks fine and I had it running a couple of years back, so hopefully a clean out and some fresh petrol and it'll be good to go!

Plans are to use the stockpiled parts that have come with the car. VAC Motorsport solid bushes, Z3 1.9 steering rack, BC Racing coilovers, HiSpec 6-pot front brake kit and god knows what else. It should leave us with a well sorted chassis, as I'll also be using a few bits from the stock room to make a nice job of it.

Image

Image

Step 1 was a quick scrub to see exactly what we have. It was very mouldy, mossy and someone had kindly splashed white paint up the side - this is only water based so will come off with a bit of work.

Image

Luckily the news was good! There's an annoying bit of rust around the rear windscreen, and the paint has come off a wing mirror, but apart from that it should clean up well. This will, of course, be left down to Soap Grenade as the car is also being stored and built at their workshops.

Image

Battery tray is also a little grotty but this will probably be coming out anyway.

Image

The best bit about the whole thing is that we already have an low mileage M62 4.4-litre V8 and mounts to get it in the E30. So once the chassis is sorted and it's been enjoyed for the summer, the M40 will be torn out and the V8 will go in with a host of Hack Engineering and Ergen Motorsport parts.

I passed you the other day in Salfords when this was on the back of a trailer. I was in the black 325i Sport.

Nice! I wasn't in the van, the old part owner dropped it down to me. Funny that it was spotted.

Any E30 sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

Good luck with the project, if you need a fuel pump I have a perfect one which came out of a 54k mile 318i and your only down the road from ML right?

Yep, not far down the road at all. Will let you know - the pump in it new so I'm reluctant to give up on it just yet, but might be handy to grab another if I have no luck. Thank you!

I've just looked at your site and couldn't find a business address on it. That always looks dodgy to me.

I don't have a workshop for customers to visit, and so don't list my address due to having my car, stock etc here. Been a lot of thieving lately.

I'm in Burgess Hill so not too far from you Ben.

Fair enough.

But it's one of the things that people are advised to avoid on the web.

Nice project, by the way.

Had a bit of time this weekend to press on with the E30.

The car had 4x100-5x120 Adaptec converters with it so I thought we might as well try them on for size, along with a set of E36 fit Style32s. They no longer fit my E36 due to the brakes on it, and I need something that will (hopefully) clear the 336mm discs we have to go on the front of the E30.

Image

Nice fit, just needs smaller tyres. Eventually I'd like to find some 16s with a 4x100 PCD, but to get it built up and rolling around these will do nicely.

Image

Also got to work on the interior. Though we plan to keep some of the E30's character, it's also going to be a fast road and track machine - the interior was never going to be staying. The headlining was knackered anyway and a previous owner had fitted a few 'extras' like additional speakers and a third brake light.

Image

The wiring loom will be trimmed down, sound deadening removed and then the dash will go back in along with a few bits of trim to keep some of the original feel. It will be for function, but it will all be neat and tidy. The sunroof will be remaining too!

Image

Main objective for the day, however, was getting the rear beam ready to be removed. I had a few other jobs going on and ran out of time to actually drop it down, but it's only one troublesome bolt away from being removed. The bolt that caused problems was one of the allen-headed ones that hold the beam bush bracket onto the sill. Everything else came apart surprisingly easily!

Image

And yes, the axle stands were moved after my assistant was given a kick! Next time I'm down there I'll grind off the bolt and drop the rear beam down. From there we can get the bushes and coilovers sorted, get a thicker ARB on there and refresh the brakes. A set of CAtuned chromoly driveshafts will be going on in future and so I'll wait until that stage to tackle the rear wheel bearings.

Thanks for reading!

More progress on the Touring - unfortunately it's something I only get to work on in my spare time as it isn't kept at Hack Engineering HQ, and things are very busy!

However, the rear beam has now been dropped and mostly disassembled.

Image

I have VAC Motorsports aluminium beam bushes and Revshift trailing arm bushes to put it back together with after it's been powdercoated.

At the front end we've also removed the old legs and wishbones:

Image

The old steering rack is also out, as we have a brand new Z3 1.9 one going in. Debating whether or not to keep the power steering. We also have a set of new Meyle HD wishbones that have been put back on for the moment (not tight, as they'll most likely have to come back off to make getting the steering rack back in a bit easier). These were fitted with VAC Motorsport offset delrin bushes.

Image

Image

That's all so far, we're on the look out for some 51mm hubs, required for the CAtuned coilovers that we have waiting to go on. We also found a bit of rust on the driver's side, very localised so won't be too much work.

I dare say, changing OEM type trailing arm bushes to these three piece press-in-by-hand type parts.. won't give you reduction in bushing compliance. There's more to it than simple material stiffness.
Personally I'm sticking to OEM on those unless I decide do uniball links.

Control arms bushes, sway bar bushes, the rear beam.. they're a different situation.

Finally had some time to do more on this. The front struts were stripped, cut and welded with CAtuned coilovers now fitted. Love these coilovers so much, nice quality bits of kit. They're also used on our S54 E36.

Image

Image

Next up will be front hubs and brakes, and the steering rack will go in once we have a linkage from Ergen Motorsport. The rear beam is also sat ready to have CAtuned camber/toe adjustment plates welded into it, so that can start going back together soon.

Another update - things are starting to come along quite nicely now.

The front wheel bearings are on (obviously not nutted up in this pic). We're now just waiting on a steering linkage from Ergen to get the steering finished up.

Image

Onto the rear, the camber/toe adjustment plates are now welded on and the whole lot has been given a lick of paint. The Condor Speed Shop bushes are also in the trailing arms ready to go. Just the beam bushes to fit and then the whole lot can go up under the car once more.

I've been a little slack in updating this lately, apologies.

The rear beam was assembled and hoisted into position, with the final specification list including:

Condor Speed Shop UHMW trailing arm bushes
VAC Motorsports camber/caster adjustment plates
VAC Motorsports aluminium rear beam bushes
VAC Motorsports aluminium differential bush
CAtuned 'Race' true rear coilovers
EBC 3GD discs

Image

At the moment that is enough to get it rolling (see below) but when we're at the new workshop it will be getting an uprated ARB and the brake lines etc will be sorted.

Next stop on the E30 train was getting the front finished off. For this I've had a HiSpec Monster 6-pot kit with 335mm rotors in my store cupboard for some time, and so these were test fitted to check the caliper clearance against the current (temporary) wheels. Rotor is backwards in this pic.

Image

Image

Tight fit, unfortunately the backs of the spokes just about touch the calipers and so those were removed again so that the car could be transported.

With all of the brake discs and suspension parts on, the car could then be put back on the ground for the first time in a while, and was wheeled outside for a clean.

Image

Image

Image

After that is was dried off and wheeled back in again, ready for the final bits and bobs before going off for rust repair. This included bolting in the Purple Tag rack properly (spacers coming to our store soon), tracking (by eye), tightening up a number of other parts and I also got a Red46 skidplate bolted up underneath.

Image

The pic doesn't show it too well but it's a really nice bit of kit. Very impressed with how easy it was to fit, the quality of the parts and the clarity of the instructions. Couldn't be easier, and it will offer some decent protection against the worst of the British roads. This is an M40/M42 plate which has perfect positioning for the sump plug on the M40. When the M62 comes we may have to add a new hole.

Last weekend the car was finally ready to go off to a good friend of mine for rust repair/resto work. As with everything, it's something I wanted done properly and so he was the man for the job. When the new unit is open in late March he will be working in-house for all of our resto work.

Currently he is only up the road so a quick tow was perfect, with me drawing the short straw and sitting in the E30.

Image

The main rust area is the front right jacking point/floorpan, which is pretty nasty but luckily quite localised. There's also a small bit around the rear end which will be tended to.

Image

Image

Image

This cut-out will be completely replicated in fresh metal before being welded back in. Looking forward to getting it over to the new unit soon so that things can move ahead at full speed!

Thank you Mr-Lachs!

It's now back with us and rot-free which is always a bonus. One of the rear wheel bearings failed badly during towing so that was replaced and the rotted parts were all completely cut out and replaced. Really pleased with how well it's come out.

Here's the front corner which was by far the worst bit.
