Tappet noise on startup

As per the title (only from a cold start) I get a loud tappet noise for about 5 seconds and then it's gone. I have the M50b25 non vanos from an e34 fitted in my car. I know these have hydraulic tappets, but I'm guessing they shouldn't make a sound on every cold start?

No smoke on startup, no smell of oil or anything visual. I'm running 15w 40 Magnatec and have just done an oil change. It was doing the same before the oil change as well.

I don't know how long this has been going on as I bought the car just before Christmas. I'm pretty sure it didn't do it on the first few days of ownership, but I may have just not noticed then, or it maybe getting worse!??

That oil your using is a bit thick tbh plus your lifters are probably full of shit too.par of the course with these engines getting older

Have you checked that the exhaust manifold is not loose? Also double check the spark plugs as a slightly loose one can sometimes cause the same sound.

What oil would you recomend? I'm just going off the Haynes manual at the mo.

Synthetic 5w 40

Thanks guys. I'll do the change on Monday to synthetic 5w 40. I hope everything's ok otherwise I'm at least going to have to take the head off before the supercharger goes on ;)

My M43 does this. No more than 2 or 3 seconds on cold start.
