You can buy caps from eBay or motor factors.
If you measure it and count how many sides you should find that size on eBay.

Ben
That's what I use, although I have broken a cap or two with it.

The only reason I ask, I've used a pair of massive grips in the past, they nearly crushed it. Also, as Brian says a Strap Wrench, could do the same. I wanted to see if anyone, uses anything different to thse items.

might sound daft, but put a leather belt round it & hold it tight with mole grips & it should come off.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

Gas pliers and a bit of old rag to avoid marking the plastic.
There oil filter housing gasket on my E36 Touring is leaking - I may fit an earlier type housing with the alloy cap and 13mm bolt whilst I'm at it.

I was looking at doing the same on my M44. I was guessing the M40 one would be a bolt on swap?

Ive always found the proper tool works wonders
As said previously, you can buy one for about £5 from most motor factors

Thanks Everyone
Andy - I had a nightmare with that Gasket, one of the 4 bolts holding the housing to the block, decided to shear off, they're very easy to break

I believe BMW also use a smaller cap as well, 74mm/12 flutes??
Like I said, if you can measure it and count the sides that should give you the size you need

I've got a big box full of the caps, and I still come accross the odd one I don't have.

Mines an M42 as well Will, I'll measure it tomorrow. Its strange, most of M40/M42 I've owned have the Metal Housing, & this one has the plastic cap type.

My IS had the plastic type same as yours Phil but was a later engine, if you ever have to do the timing chain, best to check the engine number to see what kit you need, mine didn't have the idler gear which I found out the hard way.

BMW only gave two sizes of plastic oil filter cap that aren't a hex.
