Hi all,

We will need a new family car soon and I'm considering an E60 or E61. After seeing the knowledge of you lot - what's the best engine to be going for. Don't mind whether it's a diesel / petrol / manual / automatic, as long as its reliable and not gutless.

Also what other cars to consider? (Only reason for the 5 over the 3 series is that for the age the 5 looks so much newer (live on isle of man so we don't have age related registration numbers))

Merc C class W204?

Don't want any type of Chelsea tractor / soft roader.

Would like it to be nice to drive when I use it.

I've got a 2007 535d Sport with the Superchip. 320bhp and 680nm. It's a weapon. The remap works wonders to an already quick car. Electrical gremlins are the issue, if you get them serviced properly they can do starship miles. Not good on fuel though, unless you are motorway cruising.

I'd recommend the 535d. The cheaper 525d can be pushed up to 260bhp comfortably.

I was warned off the engines in the facelift car, hence why I got the last of the pre LCi.

Are the 520d and 523i acceptable? This car will be for the wife me driving it occasionally so I think a v8 or 300bhp+ will be wasted on her☺

Never driven those variants, can't comment on them. However, bottom line is its a 5 series, not known for poor reliability. Not known for cheap running costs either.

The 523i is a waste of time. 525i autos are nice enough. The 2003 onwards E Class Merc is a really nice car - E220 CDi auto. Sorted.

my sister has a 525i auto petrol wagon. Its the de tuned 3.0 but it tramps along well. decent torque pulls it along well. Doesnt need hammering at all to get going, nice cruiser with some shove when needed
