Can anyone help me identify the 'bolt' thats holding the timing belt pulley onto the camshaft of my 1989 320i cabbie? The bentley manual says a 7mm hex wrench should do the job. But on my car there is what looks like a bolt head but with bits sticking out; a bit like a torq tool. Is there a special BMW tool required?
Any help greatly appteciated.

It's a male torx bolt. Fairly common on engines, and the corresponding sockets are readily available. Can't remember the size offhand, but it'll be something like E12 or E14.

Have a look here maybe if help. But IIRC it's a male torx socket you need, unsure of size.

On an E30, they are also used to hold the driveshafts to the diff., and the gearbox and starter motor to the engine.
