Hi ,e30 325 auto,
When the key is removed from the ignition the rev counter needle jumps to 1000rpm and stays there ( with engine off)

You probably have a later type SI board in the instrument cluster which has lithium batteries.
This type of board is prone to developing a few oddities, and this is one of them.
No idea of the exact cause, or a cure, but it appears to cause no other problems.
