The ONLY Z3 that will be worth any money in years to come will be the M Coupe with the Roadster a distant second. A bit like a 300SL Gullwing versus the roadster that replaced it - a better car, but without the mad gulling doors it doesn't have the same appeal. Regular Z3's will just die out and or become cheap sports cars like the MGB. They weren't very highly regarded when new but they sold a huge number of them - a lose/lose combination.

Z4M? Maybe, but they sold so few and they're not well known.

V10 M5? They will just become too difficult and expensive to keep going. The parts prices are just insane and they will become donors. The E39 M5 however will overtake it in value quite soon.

Not sure about the Rice but I like the 300ZX, a great looking car that went like the clappers. Once the council drift crew have destroyed 98% of them, maybe.

Mark 1 RS Focus - they're already on the rise. Like the Jap stuff, too many have been murdered by knuckledragger boost morons so a mint standard one is already getting rare. They are a superb car as well. A nice well cared for ST170 is worth stashing now.

I would be buying a sub 50'000 mile E46 M3* in a funky colour (Laguna Seca or Phoenix yellow) as they were the last of the proper M3's with both the looks and manageable running costs. The E92 V8 is a great car like the V10, they're bit fragile and the parts costs are just silly. Ditto F10 and current M3/M4 stuff.

* A rare and desirable CS with Park Lane service history will be the most valuable I reckon.
And opinions are like arseholes right? winkeye

It depends what level of "money" we are talking here, your right the only Z3s that will be worth big money are the coupes, the others will be £30k for the z3m and the 6 pot cars where E30 sports are now. The 4 pots will never be worth anything, they are just too bland.
When looking for the 2.8 I picked up recently I was looking at it from the point of view of buying a sub 5k car that I can use and not loose any money, from the looking I did they have risen.
An equivalent car 3-5 years ago was ~3k, now there asking 5k. (I didn't pay 5k winkeye ).
However your right I do only see them picking up to E30 sport money, the coupe is the one that will see the 40k+ prices.

It's worth noting for the early wide body cars there was only 30k produced world wide with most staying in the US. The bodies for these are unique, only sharing the bonnet clamshell and mid wings with the 4 pots and the rear arches with the Z3M.
I think the media's mauling of it's handling hurt the sales a lot, even though in reality they are just fine, handle pretty well and certainly better than an e30 or e36 for the same price.

Z4M - The rarity and it's purity as an M car is what's going to see them pick up value.

I was going to mention the ST170 but again I only see those hitting E30 sport prices.
There a good drive but not really "special" and not exactly fast.

300zx twin turbo short wheel base cars are rare as feck now the drift monkeys have had at them.

If E30 Alpinas are on the up (as an alternative to the M3), where does that leave the 190E Cossies? Their values must have some connection to E30 M3s if only on the basis that it is the same generation buying them...

I'd prefer a nice pre-facelift 2.6 though with some AMG morsels, or a proper widebody like Ringo Starr's old shed

The 190 is definitely undervalued imo.

Not that this would nessessary effect the price but e30 owners are blessed with a massive catalogue of parts, 190 owners are not.

Friend is restoring one and had major stresses and dramas getting things like bumper mounts.
The Internet - It has proven to be worthless, and is nothing but a repository for perverts.

Prices of them are up, guy I used to work with had a wide body one.

Trouble is aftermarket support is nil and parts are astronomically expensive which has combined to make them a bit unloved.

You need to be targeting odd, quirky cars in my opinion. The fact it is odd and a bit quirky pretty much guarantees that it didn't sell in big numbers when it was new, which of course is another plus point. These sorts of cars usually have a weird following as well.

Other plus points I think at the moment:

- NA high power output engine (new cars are all turbo....yawn)
- Pre 'high' tax bracket engines (who wants to pay £500 to tax a car they might only use for 1000 miles a year)
- Circa 1998-2005 (the people who have money remember these cars from their youth. Nostalgia sells, and rose tinted opinions blur all those poor car reviews into irrelevance).
- The 'racing' version of the car brands (RS, M, AMG, etc).

Low build number is the key one to me. When there is only 10 for sale at any one time, it doesn't take long in my opinion for the dealers to have a bit of a ring around and, lets say, inflate the price. Then all an sundry get on the band wagon, with private people joining in on the party (why wouldn't you!). Then suddenly your 10k car in one year is now for sale at 20k. This is what happened with Z3Ms and Clio V6s.

You think buying one is the hard bit, try working out when to sell one! I really think I should hang on another 5 years to my Z3M, but on the other hand I would like to try something else. The only thing I think I can do if I sell it, is try and spend my money on something else I think will appreciate. I know I would be sick to the stomach if I sold now and in 5 years it was worth 75k.

So now to completely ignore my ideal list above :) here are some at different price points that I think have a fair chance :

5k - Big Bumper Oak Green 3dr 16V Golf Gti
10k - Focus RS Mk1
15k - E46 M3 CS Manual (pony has hacked my account!)
20k - I'm struggling with this one. 997 Carrera 2 (this might dip a bit more yet, but I can't see it below 15k)
25k - Lotus Exige S
30k - Porsche 996 911 Turbo
40k - Low mileage early DB9

I invested my £195 in 1990 on a proper matching numbers 70's Fizzy, it's now worth about a grand, good ones are fetching 3 or 4.
I pay into no pension and of course have no work pension so am hoping it'll be worth 50k by the time I retire!
Joking of course, but who knows what it'll be worth in another 25 years.
