Touring De-facelift.

Started putting some of the tech 1 kit onto the touring last week, still have loads to sort out but really do think they should have all come with the smaller metal bumpers. [edit - yes I know the shut line of that panel has not been painted yet, its on the list.]

That's why I fitted metal bumpers front and rear..

It would be good to know how much you had to hack off the rear side pods?

I have been planning this for a while but insurance and needing the car daily has put it on a back burner for a few years now, I have all the fittings from Nelly's tech 1 track slag, So I know about the dodgy rear bumper mounts and I have his hacked up cabriolet rear bumper ends.

How do your wings sit with your front bumper?

I seem to have a bit of a gap, could just be adjustment though.

Spot on before it got pushed a bit, it has the pre-facelift front valance and bumper mounts.
for the rear you need to cut the whole valence off and the Tray's each side. Then re-weald up the Tray's in the new position.

Neil did his rear bumper different to me. I used the original chrome mounts and made new position in the rear panel
He wears the plastic bumper mounts the the metal bumper.

Far as I know that touring is no more, I had a few bits off it when Gareth (march109) was breaking it, Not heard from him in a long time though so it might live still.

I thought Niels car had the metal mounts, I was sure I had those in the shed but I could be wrong.

I had considered getting pre-facelift rear pockets and doing the job properly and altering the shell to look like a "genuine" pre-facelift at the back. Corners are only £60 so its an option as I have a bit of a "drift wound" on one pocket, its got a flat bottom.

My task for the winter is to do the welding (hoping for cold but dry days) and build the new engine up.

If you want to pee face the back properly, you will need inner and out rear arches plus a rear panel to cut up.

Yeah, Arch profile is different, I was going to stick with the modified cabriolet rear arch bits and facelift lights as it's just way too much pain to go down that route.

I was only going to make it pre- below the bumper line. So pre-facelift valance and corner pockets.

Attacked the back at the weekend, what a cunt, so much metal has to be moved around to do this, it really is only worth doing on a car without much value.

I managed to get the rear mounts into the correct facelift holes by using front mounts modified to move the mounting bolts up 43mm.

Nothing is fully bolted down yet as its all coming off to tackle the sills and the inner front arches.

Results below. (Yes I know the paint is orange peely, it's not been wet flatted yet and considering I'm doing it myself, meh.)




Considering we were at this stage 14 months ago... I would call it a win.


Note for the purists - It's only a £700 320 touring with over 200k miles its never going to be worth anything so it may as well be a toy.

Would be a hell of a job, would need the rear panel and ends of the quarters.

You really need to use metal bumpers or it will never st right.
Rear light panel could be done. Think it would be all down to measurements and skill. I went the paint it and get the smaller look.

Mixed up, thought you were using plastic bumper for the rear.

I did wonder.

My rear plastic bumper is totally fucked, woman wrote off her astra into it, testament to the strength of the rear of a touring though, astra is in the scrap yard and the E30 had drift stitches added to the bumper still has the tail light on it that was on the car when she hit it.

I had to lever the wing off the door so she could get her kid out of the astra.

How does your rear bumper line up?
I had to make it up a little as I went along, based on photos of tech 1 cars it looks correct.

I have Nelly's bumper ends but they still only just meet the arches, have been considering options to solve it.

it used to line up well but there has been the odd push here and there so slightly out now. But it is a fun car and the back comes out a lot with me.
I used cab bumper ends to make it meet the arch line I can't remember if neil did the same.

That's exactly what I have, cab ends trimmed a little to allow the tech 1 to fit under it.

Still seems a very marginal fit but I expect I am being too picky.

Did you have to trim your arches below the bumper line at all?

I have found the facelift arch actually comes down closer to vertical at the rear of the arch behind the wheel. The pre-arch seems to sweep more towards the rear.

Had to trim the arch below the bumper line to get the valance to sit properly.

I have an arch roller so might do a little massaging to get that area all nice.

I cut the whole valence off and everything in line with it and then went from there.
