What do people think is a good minimal selection of tools to carry in the boot?
So far I'm thinking
1) Medium adjustable wrench
2) Small adjustable wrench
3) Medium phillips
4) Medium flat head
5) Jack and tools to change wheel
I don't have the original toolkit.
Is there certain sizes of spanner / sockets that should be in there?
What do you reckon?

A Halfords tool kit is perfect for the boot of the car, plus a few other bits.

I would also put in a Halfords or similar off ebay tool kit
plus a load of cable ties and a handful of jubilee clips
Some water incase you have a little coolant leak.
some gloves and rags makes life better also.
A tow rope and jump leads have both helped me out in the past.

I've got a small bucket full of assorted nuts and blots, jubilee clips etc. A socket set and a box of Spanners and screwdrivers. A bottle of water, one of coolant and some engine oil.
I have just done an engine swap though and don't fully trust it yet!

Are you going on a long trip? I only carry what is in the tool kit. If the car goes kaput you will most likely need a new part to go with the tools

No I don't make any long trips, just to and from work about 10 miles each way.
It's just that I got some new adjustables and thought I would keep the old ones in the boot, then it got me thinking what else may be handy.
I'll probably get get some water, oil, cable ties and jubilee clips in there too based on the suggestions.
I think I might treat myself to a new socket set and put the old one in the car.
On the subject of socket sets I've got a set in mind, but does anyone have any suggestions of proper good quality stuff?

Carrying a sledge hammer is also useful if you happen to drive into bricks, it can be used to temporarily straighten out the bent steering arms

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

Done that! Also shaped out the ground in a ploughed field, and used the sledge to reform the bonnet.Jesus325iTouring wrote:Carrying a sledge hammer is also useful if you happen to drive into bricks, it can be used to temporarily straighten out the bent steering arms

When I binned my E36, I used a large to beat the wing/bumper so my wheels would move again so I could drive home.

I didn't actually take the sledge hammer with me from home. It was borrowed, along with a 10 tonne body jack kit, from the garage that recovered me from the A8.Simon13 wrote:is this thread serious?!
