Seriously? The oil pump is pretty fundamental. I ALWAYS change them when re-building an engine.

I haven't any experience of the M20 though, I know they are good for high mileage.. I'd still change the pump whilst I was there.

thats what i thought, an its what most lecturers have told me

but i looked at the gears an they are hardly worn at all. iv cleaned the filter out too. 50 quid for a new one is a stupid amount of money to a broke student like me.

also its pretty easy to change at the end i spose i could just drop the sump and whip the three bolts off?

hm decisions

Any other engine doesn't have BMW written on it though.
Most engines, I would change it as a matter of course, but BMW ones last pretty well.

Its not that they "go" but they will become weak over time and wont produce the higher pressures.

I am rebuilding an M20 325 engine at the moment and I would agree with Brian that the build quality of the original oil pump is far superior to any Ԛ£50 replacement. How many zoners do you hear complaining about oil pressure problems in high miler six pots?
If you are going to replace it do so with a BMW original part. Really we are talking about the heart of the engine here.
For the record I will be keeping my origional oil pump.

Many six potters here dont have oil pressure gauges in their cars. And if you knew the trigger pressure of the stock idiot light then you would understand why when the light comes on its too late.

But saying that, not many M20 spin the barings or have oil starvation issues. So i would also say keep the BMW pump and donÔš't buy the Ԛ£50 Euro crap.

I replaced the pump on mine (200K) 2.5 when I rebuilt it.

They cost Ԛ£90 from the dealers which for the peace of mind they give (and 40psi of oil pressure on hot idle) I'm glad I did it :)

If I was rebuilding a 200k engine, (to do another 200k), then I might consider replacing the pump and its drive.
Obvious thing to do I suppose is check hot oil pressure before the rebuild. If p[ressure holds up with a worn engine, then the pump is good.

Fair point, it's not really under more strain, but it does have more things to supply than normal.

Like Brain says though, definately worth replacing the little drive shaft. They're about Ԛ£3 or 4 from the dealer :)

It's part 10 in the diagram:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=11&fg=30

Just a little hexagonal shaft pressed into a sleeve :) (mine came with the two parts 11

Actually it looks as though you can buy just the gears if they were a concern.
