Have you had the headliner done yet? Thats what mine looked like and it had rotted from the inside out just like that.

You can clearly see the stone chips that's caused it! I will take a close up pic, If I even thought it was rotten inside too out, do you think I would post pics?? ?
Have not had the headliner down as theres no sign of rot on inside, I will nip it down paint shop when I get chance and let them look into it!

Mine's got some chips on the roof as well (sunroof equipped), but is it generally a big deal?appletree wrote:Have you had the headliner done yet? Thats what mine looked like and it had rotted from the inside out just like that.
No leaks or any obvious issues, possibly rotten from the inside, but unless you want to drive a museum example, is it something to worry about?
I care about things that make a difference you when you drive, i.e. engine, gearbox, suspension, etc...

To be fair the picture is crap and you can't see if there chips, bird shite or a bubble of rust, it's also an od place for a stone chip as its hardly a frontal area like the front valance, windscreen or the roof of a tray van, this isn't a for sale thread I was just asking if he'd had the headliner down yet and looked at the tray area as the tray runs around an 1" around the outside of the sunroof and the rust starts from the edge and works in and as mine and others have found breaks through as a tiny bubble roughly where the mark is on the OP's.

No it doesn't effect how it drives but if he was keeping it a trip to the body shop now and a quick fix now might save a big bill later.

I'd bet my house on Nobbys turd having the beginnings of rot inside the roof.
Pull the door aperture seal down and peel back the head liner a bit and viola, bran flakes!

My old Lachs tech 1 had a tiny single bubble on the roof, hardly noticeable.
Underneath however was a sea of thick brown rust which was really crusty round the strengthening near the edge of the sunroof cut out. It was only a matter of time before the whole line around the sunroof would start bubbling up.
I looked at another car yesterday, it was the same story..
My theory is this:
Jacking points (factory) are used by some tyre fitter to jack the car. They bend creating perfect areas for rust to develop. Rust becomes holes. Holes let in water to the super absorbent carpet. On a nice day the damp carpet emits moisture which condensates on the inner roof panel. Rust develops as they don't look very well painted or rust proofed.
Most e30s i've seen with crusty jacking points also have a crusty inner roof.

You don't need water to be getting into the carpet to condensate on the roof skin.
The sunroof seal is not water tight and water will get past and sit on the sunroof tray and condensate onto the skin which has no protection, just the factory E coat which only protects for so many years before it becomes porous.

Hes planning on 2k paint resto, did not make much of the roof to be honest, bought his MOT tester mate to give it once over, 3.5k later it was gone, Nice guys into Hot Rods, Mot guy runs a 54 plate Dodge Viper, he did not seem so keen on German goodness!pacerpete wrote:Nobby_N wrote:Served to a pleasant man from Attleborough!

Hope you made a decent wedge on this. To be honest selling it was the best plan......unless you wanted endless work and bills.
Have a nice holiday with the profit
