318i could someone explain the engine codes to me and tell me what i have in mine ?

Four engines have been used in E30's
M10 4 cylinder carberettor and injection
M40 4 cylinder all electronic in two capacities
M42 4 cylinder twin cam all electronic
M20 6 cylinder three capacities and injection/electronic depending on version
That's the short story,so your 318i could be either an M10 or an M40,depending on when it was built and if it has been buggered about with since!
