I know most people do it the other way around, but, I presume it is possible to swap a manual to automatic?! Being a little old/lazy and having had 2 previous 320 autos I find them rather appealing.
Also, I presume there are quite a few auto boxes laying around having been swapped out?
What would I need to swap my 91 cabbie 320i to a auto? Auto box and pedal box are a given, but would I need a different prop shaft and diff too?

you'll need the torque converter and a 6-pot auto prop , your car will have a small case 4.10 open diff as standard that will be fine for the slushbox .
not sure what you'd do about an inhibitor switch though to stop it from starting in gear .
i'd leave it or buy an auto pal .

Thanks magpie, that was the sort of feedback I wanted to deter me from doing it.
I'll leave it manual, just wanted to check if it was/wasn't straight forward. The amount of time/effort I've invested so far makes me reluctant to sell, so I'll enjoy what I've got.

E30 auto boxes are ancient and horrible, E36 box is a hundred times better

Thanks guys, put me back into thinking its doable
Will investigate an E36 auto conversion.
Last night the engine wouldn't go over 4k revs on my way out bound journey! But would on the way back and seemed much better (also developing an intermittent ignition switch fail). Then this morning bad petrol smell in the cabin and loads of white smoke out the back for 5 minutes (although no ignition fail!!). Might be time for an engine swap??
I used to be indecisive........

Before you do anything to the current car (other than the engine swap) go out and test drive a 320i Auto just to see whether its for you. There is almost nothing on the road that's slower, just check that's ok for you.
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!
