It's a very fine mesh,but is somewhat thicker than the ladies stockings that I have encountered!
I have seen stuff like perspex used,but it really needs to be able to let air pass through it to allow it to work correctly.
The proper BMW one leans forward slightly,and needs the front windows up or it folds it's self down above about 40mph.Bear in mind,if you are thinking of building your own,that you need to cover the rear seat area as well for correct operation.
We have run at speeds well above UK motorway limits in perfect comfort with ours in place,I would not be without it.

Lidl occasionally has "fly screens" for sale, intended for fitting across doors and windows to keep out flying insects. This is a fine black mesh, which may be suitable.
