when i bought my 1990 325i cabriolet i was amazed to see it fitted with functioning air con. a bonus even in a cabriolet. when i looked at the temp regulator it had small white degree centigrade number printed. on checking my build sheet the car has option 530 air con and option 535 electronic heating control. both of which still work. anybody else had these fitted from new and why is electronic heating control any different from the regular set up??.

A very much needed option, regular poverty spec heating is either too hot or too cold, with the climate you set the temp and forget.

I have it but I retro fitted it along with A/C.
I bought a 325i cabrio ages ago with a snapped cam belt and that had pretty much every option on it including the above. I fragged it and that's what gave up some of the parts.

Reminds me, need to get the factory fit aircon working in the new turd.
What's the score with converting to R134a as I assume it hasn't been done?

Buy the kit from BMW but you will prob also need a new condensor and make sure the electric cooling fan is not seized and works on both speeds.
The kit includes a new drier, 2 valve adapters, a dual presue switch and some O-rings.

The kit is about £100 give or take and a condensor is about £85 from Ecp.

thats good to know, my aircon isnt icy but fairly cool, im going to give it an overhaul but if i go to a specialist i'll get a specialist bill. i suppose its a bit like plumbing, if i can build the system, i can go to a specialist for a leak test and a gas.bss325i wrote:The kit is about £100 give or take and a condensor is about £85 from Ecp.
is the only specific part for the climate control the box in the dash or is there other system specific parts in the heating system?

The whole heater box is specific along with various other bits and bobs such as the heater control and temperature sensors.

That is dependant on year. Later cars have the interior temp sensor integrated into the box behind the temp switch.
It's behind the little circular grill above the temp switch.
Any parts that are serviceable or common to fail such as the drier and condensor are common to all E30 A/C systems other than the dealer fit scrap that never works now and that you can't get parts for.

The system (early/late) has a total of three air temp sensors, early and late cars have the sensor in the control unit and a fan that's constantly sucking air through the round grill above the temp dial.
It's pretty simple actually and if you have all the climate parts you can retro fit to any heater box as they all have the same castings.

i have two nearly identical E30 cabs and the standard heated car seems to be either cold(ish) or hot and doesnt mix effectively in the middle, going from luke warm to hot in a small adjustment. the climate control option on the 91 build year car really does have a lot more adjustment in the mid range. if it can easily be retro-fitted id recommend the effort for autumn and spring where the system compares well with modern cars. i think the system. i heard the system was developed for the more expensive E28 and then fitted as an option to the E30 at the end of its life cycle.

This is the very very early climate controller.

i'm sure on the later cars there are 4 types of heater box and you couldn't retro fit the climate to the other boxes.
I took some pictures somewhere as i actually had all 4 different types in my possession at one point

That's right, there are four types, but all have the castings for retrofitting.
