Well is it a stiff creaky noise?

Bottom bearing can be lubed attached to car and is more likely to be noisy as dirt and grit get flicked up there.

You squirt oil up from the end of the steering collomn in the engine bay

It's more of a buzzing/ vibration at low speeds when turning steering wheel. Feels more like it's near the top now I think about it.

Had any exhaust work done? If so packing the gap under the steering wheel badge with blutack gets rid of it

Read it in a resto book

Don't know of any connection with having exhaust work done, but there should be a plug in the bottom of the hollow steering shaft. If this plug goes missing, distorted sound from the engine compartment will be heard from the top of the column.
Usual cause of a light scraping noise from the top of the column is often from the carbon brush scraping on the brass horn ring on the steering wheel. Shouldn't need it in theory, but a small dab of grease quietens it.

I read that sftermarket exhaust downpipes are of thinner grade metal that causes a tinny type noise. Blue tack under the badge quietens the racket.

Thought it may have been some use

Thanks guys. This is a definite kind of dry buzz vibration felt through the wheel when turning it sometimes. It's quite loud, bit like a foghorn but quieter! I'll try and get some grease into it.

It might well be a contribution to the noise - the plug at the bottom often goes missing, and blu tac at the top is the standard quick fix.
