Don't worry about the alternator, it will still work as it is, just something to bare in mind when considering the Lithium options and wanting full reliability from Lithium technology as many people manage to brick their very expensive power sources. In terms of the alternator its a really easy upgrade, will take no time at all

Cold starts scare me, this is why I have yet to venture away from the good old motronic.

And all that stuff you are doing with ABS and DSC scares the bejesus out of me!!!
So long as you have a decent wide band lambda sensor and you can see mapped injector pulsewidths and have the ability to trim them on the fly then cold starts are easy peasy. So long as the starting strategy (static ignition timing, wall wetting on cranking and enrichment after the first bang and the decay during the first few rotations) is somewhere near then you are good to go. It's all configurable in Emerald so no worries at all. Your fuelling window gets smaller of course as the ambient temperature gets colder and gets very specific below about -10 degrees, but I doubt I will be driving the car if its that cold!!
In fairness, the most robust thing about Motronic through it's life is the start strategy - they will always start, so long as the crank sensor works and even then, it's got a good chance of catching...

Just a quick and public shout out to Demlotcrew, DanThe and Motorhole who I met up with at Oulton yesterday. Great to see the guys at the BMW owners club trackday. Thanks to Andrew for letting me passenger in his car - it's an awesome bit of kit!

Thanks Mike! Was good to finally meet
Day went past very quickly, a massive thank you for the instruction, really needed it with the low sun and damp conditions.
Glad the old girl didn't disappoint.

Yeah, echoing Mike”˜s comments, good to put same faces to some names (and characters) - and great to see everybody”˜s projects in the flesh. Thanks to DanThe for the session in his track car. It was great to get a chance to compare notes and feel the differences

Time for a long overdue update!!
So, after the adventures of getting the car mapped and with a LHD car starting to be thought about, I really wanted to get the old girl out on track to try out the new map:

Here she is at Oulton park - very impressed with the performance but it also showed that going from a 6 cylinder donk to a 4 cylinder donk makes the old geometry settings all out of whack so to say she was a bit nervous was an understatement!! All good fun though and a little sad that she is now officially retired...
However - onto pastures new!!
As detailed before, I am aiming on taking the drivetrain from the old car and put that into the new car - I have been plucking away at the old girl in my spare time at a mates unit:

A bit of weight saving here and there:

The thankless task of removing soundproofing:

Front shot of the 1.6 Donk:

(Which by the way is up for sale - engine, gearbox, exhaust, engine harness and ECU - PM me if interested!!)
Main body harness out:

And after some evenings and weekends, she's ready to go and in fairness, I think a very solid shell:

So very pleased that I managed to find her!!
I am not putting in the cage myself as my welding simply isn't up to scratch and I know a man who can so here she is on her way to be delivered:

I took a few other bits down as well as I have shopping for items such as this:

He's a cracking guy who used to be involved with various race teams - he designs it all up front and he's very fussy (which I like!) - here are a couple of concept renderings:

I can't wait to see his progress once he starts - I have supplied him with a steering wheel and boss, seat with side mounts, full custom cages kit, pedal box and dash - he's going to have the car for a couple of months to fit the cage and do a seat fitting which gives me time to strip out the old bits from the existing car.
More to come soon!

Love the renders Mike! Cant wait to see the results, maybe he can make the same for me and I will weld myself?

Time for a quick update...
The shell has been away now for a good couple of months - I've seen the car a couple of times now and progress is pretty good and I have learnt a lot about how to really make a car strong. One thing to note - THIS IS NOT MY WORK!
I can't take any credit for this at all, but thought some pics of the install at various stages would be good to have on here. Bottom line? A bit of weld porn....
Here's the cage partially installed:

Some close ups of the various bits of triangulation:

Roof section:

Rear stays:

Clean up underneath:

View from the drivers door:

And the quality of this guy's welds...

The cage is a custom cages multi point - however, most of the tubes have been re-made as they don't satisfy my installation guy as they aren't accurate enough for him!
He's now sorting out the steering column positioning (did you know the LHD cars have a 4 degree offset on the column? That is, the column is on the piss to miss the brake pedal?), pedal box positioning and seat position so that I fit.
Still lots to do of course but it's starting to look more like a race car and less like a 316...

Quick update!
Even though I found what I think is a very good bodyshell, it isn't entirely grot free - the usual front valence problems remain in the form of a bad repair:

Once this was removed, the panel looked pretty OK:

And then Lewis (the chap doing the cage install) started to work his magic:

And painted in primer ready to go:

Thankfully the only other major grot on the car is the rear valence and battery tray in the boot - hopefully not too bad to repair! I'm not a fan of doing bodywork so anyone who can, you have my utmost respect!
Looking forward to more progress soon!

Another quick update - apologies for the poor quality pics, but Lewis is concentrating on the build right now and not on the pics!
First up, you may remember that the steering column isn't right so I've had a trial seat fitting session (selfie alert!!):

And this will also determine the pedal box position as well (I have some side mounts for the seats) given such limitations as the gearbox tunnel position:

Note as well the DTM shifter........!
I've treated the car to a new set of genuine front wings:

And Lewis is working on a quick release front bumper:

Just a shame the quality isn't that great - I got it from ABS so surprised that the alignment of the panel is so poor, but the guy who's painting it seems to think that it can be straightened up...
Some more shots of the cage coming together:

Note that the steering wheel is now MUCH lower than before!

And doors back on to make sure they fit OK:

And some extra gusseting for the front turret:

More to come soon hopefully!

Given its a wet Bank Holiday, I've had a bit of time at the PC to sort a few pics of what's been happening lately. Fingers crossed, the car will be heading back my way in a few weeks so I can start on the rest of the build. For now, plenty has been going on.
First up - pedal box - the pics above show a mocked up position. Lewis has been designing a few bits and pieces to get it properly in, such as laser cut base plate:

And fitted in the car:

And with the pedal box mounted:

And to make it all super comfy for me, a false floor has been made:

And from another angle:

I had a sit in the car recently and it's really a comfy place to be!
I've also asked for a few other bits to be made up - a proper air filter for the carbon airbox - I got this from Lee at Massive brakes in Canada - it's a lovely piece:

And some mounts for the quick release front bumper:

And some work at the front to shroud the radiator more effectively:

And finally (and one of the reasons that there's been a bit of a delay) - the fuel cell finally arrived from ATL:

And mocked up in place:

Starting to get very excited now!!

A really long overdue up and hopefully some more progress to share...
Last September I eventually got the rolling ”˜Shell home ”“ long story short, the chap who was doing the cage started off really well and the quality of the work that *was* done really is the business, but then things deteriorated for a variety of reasons ”“ a build that should have taken 3 months took NINE, not listening to what I wanted and various other things ”“ I won’t go into details here as it’s not fair on the other chap ”“ the main thing is I got my car back very late and then had to re-evaluate where I was going with it:
For a short while (about 2 minutes!) I had TWO E30 turds in the garage ”“ the old rolling ”˜Shell is now with the new owner...

So, before paint, I wanted to mock a few things up and drill some holes for the riv-nuts that would hold one or 2 things in place so the car has half a chance of not corroding from day 1:
First up, I mocked up where the fire extinguisher, battery and battery isolator would be:

The lithium ion battery is really trick and weighs about 1kg which is pretty good ”“ should crank over OK as well as it’s rated to 550 CCA
A bit of fettling to get the passenger side false floor to fit:

Both false floors will be black and also covered in skater grip at various places so should look pretty good when done.
Mocked up both door cards and the rear cards (I didn’t get any pics of the rear cards):

The door pull is from a Porsche ”“ neat little thing and light too!
Next up ”“ mock up the fuel cell, cover, filters and pump:

Apologies it’s in the wrong orientation - photobucket ain’t playing nice with me today! The filters and pump are mounted on a piece of carbon fibre which is rubber mounted to the boot floor ”“ light and isolates the horrible noise the fuel pump will make hopefully!
There’s a whole heap of plumbing that’s been done inside the car as well ”“ I won’t bore you with that but upload pics when the final build is done ”“ needless to say, a lot of hole drilling for fuel lines, brake bias cable, brake lines, fire extinguisher plumbing and bulkhead fittings:

But I will tease you with a bit of pipework I made up from the fuel cell to the cover for the fuel supply and fuel return:

A nice bit of work before things went wrong was the cowling built for the radiator, oil cooler and air filters:

Washer bottle I am putting in the boot ”“ I want to try and keep the engine bay as clear as possible:

At the moment I am stripping everything down from the car ready so that she can go for painting at the beginning of March ”“ one final thing I bought:

So if anyone wants my fibreglass bonnet in Dolphin grey, please do let me know - it's a nice piece from ABS and has been modified so that it doesn't flap about...
Fingers crossed that progress is more smooth from here...
