I fully stripped my wing mirrors for paint and have got them back to start rebuilding them but I'm sure I read somewhere that depending on how you rebuild them they can be made left hand drive or right hand drive i'm guessing by turning the ring with the motors in through 180' but how do you know which way is which?

Urban myth!
Difference between LHD and RHD mirrors is in the alloy bracket that mounts the mirror case to the door.
Check the angle that the case sits at to see exactly what I mean.
Mounting a LHD o/s mirror to a RHD car,the mirror glass fails to move far enough out to give a view down the side/rear,all you can get is the side of the car...as pointed out to me by my MoT man when I first offered up my ex-LHD touring for it's first UK MoT!
