In Germany & France Uni is Monday-Friday, 9-5. They also have semester placements from start to finish.

Most German/French students come to the UK for a break. Most courses here are 16 hours a week.

That's what they told me anyway.
My English lit degree was about 3 hours contact time a week :D No seven figures job in finance at the end of it though sadly (as noted above)
3 hours is ridculious but would it be rude for me to assume you didn't have tuition fees?

I had some fantastic lecturers that made a module enjoyable/interesting. Others turned up, read from out of date lecture slides, assigned coursework and fooked off. Made you wonder what you were paying for. I remember one old wench "I don't have to be here, I came from a high flying job". I made her life difficult :)

..yep pre tuition fees (finished in 1999).. :D Re: the bankability of arts degrees, of the people who did English with me, one is a barrister, one has been a lawyer and is now an author, one is working in finance in Bermuda and one is a TV producer working on such classics as the 'Undateables' and 'Come Dine With Me'. (I'm working in the music biz).

Although finance is undoubtedly a well paid industry, I'd rather have time than money at the end of the day :) (although early retirement would be great)..

You old thespian! :)

My plan is to go back to Uni and sell my soul to a management consultancy firm.

Gert, we were both right & wrong. State owned univeristies are free, private universities are €400 a semester.

1.2 million votes is enough to make the ruling party take note. Especially with such a small majority.

Do you buy into this notion that FPTP has seen it's day?

I don't

It's only going to benefit minority parties. It's up to the likes of UKIP to make themselves appeal on a national level

I can't see it either but like we talked about the other night, while I was pissed and shouting at the TV.

For decades, parties have won overall majorities on percentages in the low 40s, which was bad enough (Margaret Thatcher never got more than 44 per cent) But within my lifetime two have done so on mid 30s (Tony Blair in 2005, David Cameron now).

Now, we have smaller parties that are either massively over-represented (SNP wins 95% of the seats on 50% of the vote.) or massively under-represented (Ukip and Greens getting two seats from five million votes).

I personally don't have a problem with that. I knew the rules of the game before I threw my jumper down but the legitimacy of a government that can't command the support of half the nation is questionable. Voter disengagement? Sustaining the Union?

FPTP might be unfit for purpose but there are other establishments I'd take the hammer too first.

What play was it Gertrude?

Had an interesting and political meeting today. Was attending a seminar on Jersey's position in the financial world and got talking to the Chief Minister and his assistant (friends of my dad, old boys club don't you know) about education on the island, the lack of student loans, how it affects the poorer families and how we can improve higher education on the island amongst other things. As a result they have set up a meeting with me and some other States members and have asked me to form a committee in college and report back with feedback from the students.

This is going to look cracking on my CV :D

It is, it's why I hate Kos. Dam Cypriot potatoes coming over here and stealing the market from good honest, wholesome, Irish spuds!

I was telling Gert, I've made an offer on a house that is worth less than a tenth of your place. Prick!
