Education isn't all about the sciences. Society needs creative artists and thinkers too.

I am all for a complete reformation of the education system. Personally, I would like to see a system where those who will not achieve GCSE's are given the option at 14 to start vocational training. Say, lessons in plumbing, brick laying etc with basic maths and English skills thrown in, along with life skills (budgeting, and education on loans, taxes etc). Turn 16, and they are going to be far more attractive to employers looking to take on apprentices if they have a base knowledge to start with, combined with the fact I bet it would propagate a better work ethic than being forced into a classroom learning trigonometryAndyboy wrote:Meanwhile, a relatively uneducated friend of a friend is earning more money that he can realistically spend. And I know what you are saying Gertrude, but I have a few friends who are artists, and fewer who make a living off it. The ones who make money from it have no formal training. Compared to say the girl I know who studied fashion and textiles at uni who now lives in a shed in her grandparents garden earning peanuts hand spinning hipster jumpers on a loom, that masters really paid offGert_8 wrote:Education isn't all about the sciences. when it comes to doing completely useless college/uni courses a mate of mine did one 20yr's ago & eveyone said he was wasting his time with it.
what was it? building & repairing/rebuilding wattle & daub/mud & stud houses. i:e wood framed house with walls make of straw, horsehair & mud (a certain mix) with a central inglenook fireplace to heat the house with either a thatch roof or pan tile roof,
if you are unsure what i mean the PM jesus (roger) he should know what i mean lol.
like i said, everyone told him it was a waste of time & that he'd never make any money from it, how he laughed when he sold his first build for enough to pay for the first build & afford to build a few more (can't remember the exact amount but it was a fair old wedge
also if any of you have heard of flag fen near peterborro he help'ed to design & build the round hoses they have there.
he's going to be traing me how to do it in the summer
turns out he's one of the main men in this country & parts of Europe for this type of building. so who says he was wasting his time? he only has to work for 6months evey year or so.

I think that's a bit different Steve. He has the foresight to learn a dying skill ans of course , if he's good enough, he's going to do well. It's a similar thing with thatchers and guys who restore the ornate plasterwork.
What is being referred to above is the time wasters doing degrees in areas that have no intention of actually following up.

he's the same age as me & is retiring when he's 40 later this year.
he did it 20yr's ago to prove folk wrong, & yes he's done very well for himself.
some of the courses that are on offer today are a joke of the first water, my step brother showed me one at the local college for social media studies, you basically sit on the laptop on facebook & twitter all day & "examine" whats "trending", now that is a waste of taxpayers money in any "normal" persons eye's.

He clearly already is at good writing music and songs and can play many instruments, well worth buying him his first guitar best part of ten years ago. I remember it well open it Christmas morning, and could play it by the afternoon.

Not many degrees are actually vocational and there is trouble with academic language differing from language used by employers. Even with your degree, I can guarantee it will hardly be mentioned in an interview. It's all about beating the paper sift.
All the best with it, hope you smash the life out of it.

By vocational, I mean you can walk in qualified-useful.
Law, accountancy, nursing, is a diffinate no. You need further paper work/experience.
Student nurses are genuinely more trouble than they are worth, well 99.9%.
Student psychologists are also hilouriously useless.
Funny stories I could never post online.

Absolutely, but it should be a privilege based on ability, not just how rich your daddy is.ross_jsy wrote:University should be a privilege, not a right.
It's very easy to sit there pointing the finger at media studies students when you have all the benefits of a comfortable upbringing and expert guidance from your middle class parents who know exactly how the system works from within and can also introduce you to all sorts of people who can and will further your interests.
I know a kid like that who's left 2 cushy 20 grand a year (straight out of uni) jobs in marketing, both arranged by his dad. Both times he left because he felt the work he was being given was beneath him. He'll get as many cushy offers as it takes until he gets something he likes, and in 20 years he'll be making 150 grand a year just like his dad.
Very different story if you're 18, academically gifted but come from the wrong side of town. Even getting to university is likely to be impossible, even if you're a talented mathematician or physicist.
So the smug chat about charging keeping out people who would just waste everyone's money is really quite inappropriate.
As is thinking that 'success' in art, of any kind, is measured in pounds, shillings and pence, but that's another story...
