The way things are going it's looking inevitable. Besides, it's been said that any party in government during a recession and a period of austerity never gets back in again.

That depends if the other party that caused the recession and the need for austerity is their competition.Gert_8 wrote:The way things are going it's looking inevitable. Besides, it's been said that any party in government during a recession and a period of austerity never gets back in again.
I think Tony Blair lite (himself a Margaret Thatcher lite) will be back in power but who will form a coalition with the Tories this time?
Don't think Nick Clegg's party will get enough votes to make up the numbers for Tories.

A UKIP/Tory coalition would restore my faith in this nation..

Recession was caused by world wide banking crisis. If anything it was Bush Jr's fault for letting Lehman Brothers collapse undermining public/ investors confidence in the Banking system.Mitchen wrote:That depends if the other party that caused the recession and the need for austerity is their competition.Gert_8 wrote:The way things are going it's looking inevitable. Of course Labours fiscal profligacy and excessive government borrowing played no part in the state we found ourselves in87mtech27 wrote:Recession was caused by world wide banking crisis. There's nothing inevitable about it. It could go either way and I hope that Labour lose and lose by a good margin.
just stop for a second and think about it. 5 Years of Miliband. Balls. Harman. In charge. Wearing their smug self serving lefty grins whilst Telling you that they know what's best whilst taking your money and giving it to the next generation of wasters.
Then in 2020 we go through this whole ridiculous charade again.

Maybe so but when you've spunked all the money and sold off assets at an all time low then your not exactly in a good position to ride out the bad times!87mtech27 wrote:Recession was caused by world wide banking crisis. Hahaha. This is so funny. The general public has a very short memory and the whole thing is cyclical

Which prompts me to say why the he'll is the current bunch of idiots selling (to their rich friends in the city) off the nation's share in Lloyds Banking Group now that they are making money? Shouldn't we hold on to these and enjoy the dividend... After all it was our money that was risked to keep them afloat during the troubled times.bss325i wrote:Maybe so but when you've spunked all the money and sold off assets at an all time low then your not exactly in a good position to ride out the bad times!87mtech27 wrote:Recession was caused by world wide banking crisis. Royal Mail has also been privatised when it's finally making a profit
Ha! If only you knew...87mtech27 wrote:Royal Mail has also been privatised when it's finally making a profit
The government did well to get rid of that sinking union infested ship.
It was Thatcher that sold off the majority of our assets and spunked the money (made people in the 80s believe they was getting rich) till the coffers were empty and the nation has been broke ever since...
I will give it to the current tools for addressing the National deficit but they aren't going about it the right way IMO.

Do you own your own home?
Do you have a pension?
Do you have private health care?
Do you feel your job is secure?
Do you want to sell your house to be able to pay your care bills?
Just something to think about.

A union is a lowly paid worker's best friend... I do like how the rich make the poor believe something that is in the poor folks interested is bad for them.
All parties are in it for short term gain and not for the nation's long term best interest

In 1997 we were in a stable economic position. In 2010 we were fu cked.87mtech27 wrote:It was Thatcher that sold off the majority of our assets and spunked the money (made people in the 80s believe they was getting rich) till the coffers were empty and the nation has been broke ever since...

I manage in the postal industry, I have the misfortune of having to deal with the union and Arthur Scargill types everyday.. The concept of what a union should be, and how unions actually are.. are two completely different things.87mtech27 wrote:A union is a lowly paid worker's best friend... You will never fully grasp that until you see just how suffocating to business growth, and how petty with employee relations, they are.

Yes I own my own home - if Labour get in they will doubless think of new and interesting ways to tax it.Gert_8 wrote:Do you own your own home?

Yes I have a pension - if Labour get in they will doubtless think of new and interesting ways to get their hands on it.
No I don't have private health care - but as I work and don't qualify for any sort of benefits I'm clearly not as important as someone who does claim benefits and who no doubt Labour will prioritise because they are "poor"
Yes I feel my job is secure - if Labour get in that could all change tomorrow
No I don't want to sell my house to be able to pay my care bills - but if a Labour get in I'm sure I'd have to as after all because I worked my ass off to buy my house I must be rich ( I'm not ) and therefore as they think I'm rich I must be punished.

Hindsight is a great thing.
I make no attempt to defend that tool selling half of our gold reserve (we should be stockpiling it not selling!!!) but 2 billion isn't much in the greater scheme of things... Our current deficit iirc this year is 90 billion.

The 90 billion is down to the Labour Party & the recession they caused in 2008. And they have the nerve to blame the Tories, for the cuts!

IMO cuts should be made when the economy is in good shape and the private sector can handle millions of people about to be unemployed.
During economic downturn it's ideal to increase spending (on infrastructure and projects) to keep money flowing.

From 1979 to 2012 we have been in a deficit regardless of whichever party came to power with the exception of years 88-89 under John Major and Brown from 98-2001.
