Is it possible I retro fit the above head check panel to a 1990 316?

To fit it and get it working, you would need to change the entire body loom, including fusebox, for one from a six pot car.

Nevermind then, are they relatively plug and play in 6cyl's?

It is not an 'add on', it's standard equipment on six pots, and is all part of the main loom. Car wouldn't be roadworthy without some parts of the system plugged in.
