shotblasting, cleaning, painting car parts

Hi,

I am in the middle of a m52 conversion and have bought some rear trailing arms, front struts, gearbox etc.

I thought it would be worthwhile whilst these parts are off the car to clean them, possibly shotblast and put some sort of paint or protection on them afterwards.

Whats the best products or best way to do this in terms of the processes?

I was going to start by cleaning them with some degreaser or TFR and then jetwash them.

The question then is can you paint/protect these with something to make them look new again, or is it best to leave them?

I never had those parts done but had other powder coated and found it cheap, cheaper then buying the paint to do it myself! Nicer finish too.

Powder coat is generally a go to but needs to be good quality as cheap stuff can get chipped and once the protective layer is broken then water/corrosion can work it's way under the plasticy layer.

I have heard really good things about epoxy mastic 121, It is not as visually pleasing but it is like shit to a blanket and completely resistant to solvents and everything a car commonly sees.

Epoxy mastic is what they paint the underside of ships in , obviously sitting in salt water. nothing provides better rust protection apart from launching it into space.

Aye, Have been meaning to get some to do things like trailing arms and back plates, didn't have time to before my 5 stud as MOT work forced my hand.

Keen to try it out on the underfloor as well.

I was looking at POR 15 chassis black... Thoughts?

I've used POR15 Chassis black on my E30s wishbones and the sills and arches of my Mk1 Golf and it's great. Even did the hammer test on the wishbones and it didn't even mark it. 2 years, including winter use, on the Golf and it's as good as when first done.

However everything else under my E30 has been stripped and ppwdercoated. If the place stripping the parts does powder coating you'd be as well to get them to do it.

Good to hear nothing bad about it!

I've used hycoat stuff..... Absolute rubbish !!

I'm doing it all DIY so I'll cost up the POR 15 chassis black v expoxy mastic...

POR 15 is only good if you paint onto a shotblasted area so make sure the surface is really rough to paint otherwise it will just peel off.

Epoxy mastic or epoxy primer is good and even better on a shotblasted surface, I would go for epoxy myself, I used both on my m3 rebuild and epoxy wins all the way.
