Passenger side..

Drivers side......

:?

I was out yesterday for a "spirited drive" and after a couple of hours I heard a slight rubbing coming from the rear.

and today I've noticed the whole rear end has shifted over to the passenger side, quite a fair bit

I've been under and the trailing arm bushes are still good as new and so are the beam bushes, (polly bushes btw)

and cant see anything obvious,
does anyone know of any measurements I can do to see if either the trailing arms or the beam is bent :D

Check the upper shock mounts ......Have they torn out of the inner arches ? Happened to me on an old 323i years ago but I remember the banging was horrendous so unlikely here

Maybe the inner arches have given way?

Yeah they do make a right old clatter when they've gone,

There's nothing torn/rusted away and they don't look out of shape, well to the naked eye anyway

Both sides are level from ground to highest point in the arch lip?

Hmm just measured..

passenger side is 570
drivers side 565
so a 5mm difference

it also looks like there is more "camber" on the drivers side than the passenger

so......trailing arm mebbies..?

50mm from those figures. That'd be a massive difference

I would expect the side which is most recessed at the top to have the most camber (if everything else is ok).

I have seen cars with broken front suspension components complain of rear geometry issues but in fact its the front which is the problem.

I personally think that Poly bushes are nothing but rubbish, but thats for another topic.......

I have exactly the same issue at the moment.....

Rear beam bushes still look fresh on mine too.

I'm suspecting the rear upper mounts, as there is a knocking sound & that is one area that I haven't been yet.

Going to have a proper suspension overhaul very soon, so hopefully sorts out any annoying rubbing issues.

I pulled the shocks off yesterday and my top mounts are perfect, checked to see if the shocks were knackered and their not.
Pulled the springs out to check them and their identical,

Gave the trailing arms a good old prod/wiggle with a pry bar where they mount to the beam and there was no untoward movement,
Pulled the bottom plates off the main beam bushes to check them and they are still factory fresh.

And when I put the shocks and springs back on, I swapped them over, driver to passenger side & vice versa,
Guess what,
Still the same

How do you know anything has changed?

Do you have measurements from earlier to compare it with?

Are there any signs of any rubbing?

Not sure i know what you mean????
Both rear wheels were straight now one has excessive camber and the other is rubbing on the outer arch.

Yes there is signs of the passenger side rear rubbing

There's obviously been a change or I wouldn't of posted this thread

I just wondered if you had held a tape measure to it before.

It is difficult to tell anything from the pictures.

Might help if you took some more fro different angles.

Never needed to fella,
I know the car back to front and inside out
It's never rubbed on the rear, ever,
it didn't at the start of the day, but did at the end of a full day of a rather good seeing to.

For the camber to change either the spring height has changed or the trailing arm is bent.

Has it started rubbing since you fitted your new wheel spacers? :)

Well, yes and no lol
Yes the 5mm spacers are fitted and the car has been used a couple of times since fitting them,

But when they were fitted, both wheels were nice and straight and there were no rubbing issues

The rubbing on one side only started after a day of boosting allover the world on the Sunday.

I'm taking the car to see a "car straightening guy" who should be able to tell me what's what.

But before I do, I would like to see if I can find the fault my self,
which is why I wanted some factory measurements
