How much do you think one of these would cost to run, all in including petrol, insurance, tyres, servicing etc etc over the 13 years
£1500 a year on average? X 13 = £19500

And/ or storage costs to keep one out of the rain/weather if you didn't have a garage on your house , ie a rented garage at £50 a month for 13 years or more depending on location

I looked at M3's quite in depth in about 2006 when I had a nice lump sum come in, just after I did my first 24v conversion, and decided it was a waste of money as I could build a faster car for less money

Was speaking to a neighbour about E30s the other day, him and his brothers have had various type of sports cars over the years, to include a few E30s such as 335i, Alpina C2 2.7 and a Macau blue M3 EVO II.
He claimed the M3 was over-rated and much better preferred the C2 2.7. Needless to say he was shocked when I showed him the price of the Macau Blue M3 EVO II on sale at the moment for 67k
He sold his for 21k around 20 years ago and mentioned his cousin sold one 12 years ago for £3600

back in 2000 someone offered to swap their black M3 for my very original low bumper 1972 Fiat 124 spyder. on balance i decided the spider was the better bet and the M3 looked a bit naff with a spoiler on the back. thats the closest ive come to owning one and the spyder with the exception of its nice (unreliable) twin cam two litre engine was a total piece of crap. whoooops.

Wish I'd bought an evo, but I didn't even know there was such a thing.

It's madness, in 2001/2002 I had a 4 door E36 325i, full M3 Replica inc leather, mirrors and wheels etc, I got offered a Black M3 as a straight swap, although at the time they were probably worth the same, I declined as I preferred mine, bot do I regret that.

I was only 11 at the time, if only I was a little older to buy one of those
I wonder if E46 M3s will rise in price in the future

In May 2005 I bought my M3 (1987 early euro 195bhp car) for a shade under £4k.
Since then it has had approx £1k spent on the suspension and brakes, £4k on an engine rebuild, £500 on a Powerflow exhaust and I bought a s/h set of 15" BBS for track use for £150 (car came with 5 16" BBS rims).
I've spent a bit on tyres, oil, pads, etc, and I've had to modify/rebuild the front strut legs as the AVO adjustable dampers came with a shockingly poor design/manufacture of the top cap nut that just pulled out and broke the strut to threads...
However, my £10k odd investment is now worth around £24k which isn't bad for a 10yr ownership...given that most cars would lose value over 10years.

Your best bet for a similar future investment would be an Z3M coupe

I think the ship Z3M Coupe let years ago. M3 CSL and M135i seem like the next two cars that will be worth a bit in the future as well the M3 CS, however they are very expensive to begin with and I rather invest in brick and mortar for a better return.

I nearly parted with 10k for that car when it had 29000 on clock!

I still think the Z3M coupe is a good bet...especially an S54 RHD version...
Few made
still cheap enough (<£25k)
fun to drive and quite fast enough
looks different
The E46 M3 CSL is already too expensive and there were more made
Perhaps 1M Coupe would be a good one, too...

I came close to buying a red 1987E M3 for £3500 in 2000. It was clean and drove okay but it has some Cat D form, no history of any sort and I decided against it. At the time there were decent straight ones around for 5 grand.
I bought my Sport Evo from Pete in 2002 for around £11500. If I still had it, I'd be wanting north of 70k - it was a very, very good one.

I have the annoying (if slightly pleasant) problem of trying to work out when to sell my RHD S54. If I sold it now, I wouldn't be too far off doubling my money, which isn't bad over 3 years. You just don't know how far they might go, or if the bubble will burst. I'd be sick to the stomach if I sold it and in another 2 years it was worth £50k.
I am thinking about selling it any trying a 996 turbo as I think those bottomed a few years back and are on the incline. Perhaps that way the money I invest in that might also increase.

E34 M5s are, whilst an excellent car, are a little too numerous and have no competition pedigree to enhance the value...

yeah , think how sick you'd feel if you'd owned 4 911 2.4S's in the past, i bought a 72 2.4E for 1200 quid in 2000 in RHD!!!!!. for the bonnet and dash roll!! got it running and drove it 5 miles home. white with black vinyl and no sun roof, a guy in my area bought the rest as a "project" off me for 1600 quid including the 15x6" forged fuchs because i couldnt be arsed storing them. all north of 100 grand now and thats game over for dreamers like me.

For future investments I'm afraid the boat has already sailed on the Z3M's, asking prices have almost doubled in the past year. You can still do ok on E36 and E46, especially if you buy one of the best examples, but who will do that? Very few..
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!

I don't think E46 M3 prices have bottomed out yet. Around 90k of them was manufactured so there are still too many around currently and it will be a while before there numbers dwindle enough for the prices to start rising again IMO.

Nor has a Z3M...
It does have a unique look though.
I think e46 M3s are starting to rise actually. 5k scrappers are all but a thing of the past now.
