Hello Tech Zoners.
I will attempt to carry out a oil change tomorrow.
1: How much oil should I use? I have 8L in total of Castrol 10w- 40.
I had a look at the wiki and it states 4.5L capacity for a 318iS M42 engine.
Just to be sure is this how much I should use?
I understand over filling and under filling can cause issues and damage the engine.
Thanks
Jon

4.5L should do it (although I've seen the Wiki say 5L and 4.5L on the same page). I normally add 4L, let it settle and check the dipstick. Then add small amounts of oil, checking the dipstick as I go until its at the right level.

Thank you Jmc330i.
I shall follow through the same. Should I fill to the top of the dip stick mark? or should I keep it 3/4 full on the dip stick level ?
Thanks again.

Best to fill it up to the full mark initially, then start the engine and let the oil pressure light go out. It'll fill up the filter which takes about 0.5 of a litre to do so, and will drop the level.
Once that's done, just top backup with oil till full, though running at 3/4 doesn't do any harm, though it might run a little hotter in the summer as there's a little less oil to soak heat up.

A quick follow on question guys,
BMW are charging £13.42 for a Oil filter which I presume is not so bad.
I checked on ECP and I found a Mann filter for £4.56 ?
Question is which should i go for ? Is there a real difference between the two?
Thanks again.

Difference is about £9.00! And it's a no brainer. The stealers mark up is astronomic.
