Baur convertible
Moderator: martauto
A guy down my road wants his baur 318 off of his drive, has sat for 7 years, it's a 318 with a 2.5 engine, mouldy interior and dosent start, 15"bbs no centre caps, needs jacking points welding, other than that fairly clean on the outside, he wants £400, is it worth it? I may add that it wasn't originally a baur vert, he claims his dad sent it to Germany for baur to do the roof, and bmw to swap the engine
Be prepared for a barrage of "what do you want one of those for " style comments.
Interiors are cheep and if the only major body areas are the jacking points , you could be on to a good little car.
Whats the hood etc like? They clean up really well with the correct products.
Offer him something ridiculous like half and work from there, cash is a good product if he wants drive space.
I have one and love it to bits
Mart.

The body work is fairly good, and it deffinately is a baur convertible, i would not have questioned it had he not said that it went back to germany to get it done as he says it started as just a 318 convertible. And im more concerned with the fact bits have been changed and its not really original he says it was his dads who isnt alive now, and the son dosent seem to know much about it other than 'its a fookin rocket mate' and about the roof.
he says hes had it running but needs a new rad, sat for 7 years what else would be gone, brakes?

Can't remember another local to me Mart. Last time I saw mine it was on a trailor going south. Some guy off here bought it for parts as he wanted the engine. Gave it up far too easily .....

The fact the owner states it was originally a 318 convertible says to me he known jack shit.
It would have been a 2 door 318. And ALL baurs went away to be converted.
It sounds like a molested turd. I don't know many people who could afford to have BMW convert a 318 to a 325! BMW do not fit second hand engines and a brand new 2.5 lump with ALL the ancillaries, wiring etc would have been lottery win money.

My dad had an old Baur, I don't know why but i like them for some reason
Give it a good going over then make your mind up.
If you can get it for less than £400 and break it you will have your money back with interest in no time!

Hi,
Most Baurs--- but not all--- went from the BMW factory to Baur Stuttgart for conversion, then back to BMW factory, to be sold with a full factory warranty.
However, BMW Dealers were also able to have a Coupe in their showroom sent back to Baur for conversion to the Top Cabriolet; they were also able to do the same thing as a custom order for a customer.
Several other coach builders outside of Germany were licensed by Baur to do the conversion, although those are VERY few in number.
South Africa BMW built over 3,000 E30 Baurs under license to Baur.
So it is entirely possible that this Baur was sent back to Baur for conversion after it had been purchased. The conversion added about $5,000 to the cost of the base coupe from the factory, so the post-sale conversion cost would have been at least that.
Does it have a Baur plate number, usually located in the left side door jamb, near the door hinge? It should say"Karosserie Baur Stuttgart", followed by a number starting with the letter "B". All factory Stuttgart-built Baurs have that number plate, although the South African-built models do not. If you have that plate, post a pic of it, or send it to me at my blog, BAURSPOTTING. I will do a post about it. And I agree, you can't go wrong at that price. With a little work, you will have a rare fun car that will turn heads, generate curious onlookers and even raise a few eyebrows.
Many folks do not understand the design of that roof (Hint: form follows function), and have no idea of its important role in a nearly forgotten period of automotive history. But you soon will!

Here is a link to an earlier thread in here, with a pic from my friend Jeroen of the Baur plate that I mentioned:
