Okay so the car wouldn't start yesterday. I have noticed a few times recently that the engine was turning quite weakly when starting. I had just assumed it was the cold weather as it has been okay most of the time. I gave replaced the battery as the battery was old and thought it was losing power. Silly really as all the ignition lights have been lighting up fine.

So I have just bridged pins 11 and 14 and I noticed smoke was coming from the starter motor. Has anyone had this happen and am I right in thinking I should replace the motor. All the wiring looks fine and I could hear the starter attempting to turn but wouldn't budge.

Smoke from where exactly? The motor? The solenoid? The wiring connections?

To be honest once I saw the smoke I stopped bridging the pins as I got quite worried. I would say it was from the motor itself. I might connect a jump lead (negative) between the sump plug and steering rack as I have read that this will establish if there is a problem with the earth grounding
