Make sure they are 3W, not the more common 5W version, which WILL melt things.

You might be able to get some from consumabulbs.com. Their prices are usually alright.

I was going to do this but I couldn't find 3w bulbs in white not the normal amber colour

So then I was thinking about the led ones
They shouldn't get got enough to melt anything should they?

Not sure what you mean here. The bulbs are white. The amber colour comes from the plastic in the cluster.

If you do that the dimmer won't work.

LED bulbs are unlikely to 'connect' with the light guides effectively, and there is absolutely nothing to be gained by using them. White, 3W, capless bulbs are what you want.
