Ive come to replace the alternator on my 316 but it didn't fit in the existing bracket, so i have brought also a new bracket.
When it came to removing the bracket I found out that the pulley to the fan is right in the way. As a novice can any one tell me the easiest way around this? Do I have to take the whole fan apart just to take out the one bolt?

The obvious question is , why does the replacement alternator not fit ? My guess is because it is incorrect ! :( There is no need to remove that bracket.

There must have been a cross over year or something but its impossible to find the exact same alternator than what was previously there.
But what i removed looked like an aftermarket alternator, it wash't Bosch or Valeo.
But I can't find this exact shape anywhere, so i thought it would be easier to get an alternator of the same output and replace it like that.
If anyone has this alternator, let me know now.

I just really wanna get it fitted and fire her up

What's the part number of your new bracket, or what is it supposed to fit?
The problem you may come up against doing things this way is that the alternator pulley may end up not being perfectly in line with the crank and fan pulleys.
To answer your original question, you will need to put the alternator and fan belt back on and tight, then place a 32mm spanner on the nut between the fan and the pulley. Smack the free end of the spanner hard with a hammer, and the nut should loosen, but remember IT'S A REVERSE THREAD. Unscrew the nut completely, remove the fan, loosen the four 6mm bolts on the front face of the pulley, remove the alternator and belt again, then remove the four 6mm bolts completely, along with the pulley.

ETK shows two different alternator brackets have been used on the 316, depending on the alternator fitted.

OP, why not get your original alternator overhauled and save yourself a load of hassle.
