It might work out cheaper to invent a time machine go back to 1986 buy one new, store it carefully then come back and open the garage doors and hey presto a mint under 100 miles chrome 325i

Bugger no service history though, hmmmmmmm
Why does a car need service history if it's not been run but stored properly.

FSH = I have some receipts for oil and filters, done bugger all else to the car though.
Zero rust = Zero VISIBLE rust
Never welded = Likely to be full of holes hidden by under seal
Low mileage = Lots of cold start back and forth to the shops
Perfect paint = Respray
Nice standard example = Steering rack like a bus, seat that do your back in, brakes like the flintstones car
1 lady owner = 1 owner with no idea of proper maintenance
Mechanic owned = 1 owner with a proper idea of maintenance and no time/willing left to touch their own car
Recent MOT = I fixed enough to scrape through the MOT in order to up the price
Requires some attention = all of the above applies
Low mileage does not always mean lots of cold starts and short journeys, it could also mean it's only used at weekends and/or for six months a year.

Because things perish and corrode whether the car's in use or not. Just because the car's been stored in a dry garage with the weight off the axles won't prevent the waxes drying out or the bushes crumbling or all sorts of other things going brittle. This is why cars need a paper trail, no matter what their age or mileage is.

sorry mate you are very wrong, nobody will buy a200k car [apart from me] and it would be around half the price of a 100k car

low milege with provenance to account for it is the key at this age. So having the correct bits of history to back it up

Rubbish Grrrrr!

So I suppose delivery mileage cars will be old nails that are worthless?!

Have you ever seen, let alone driven, sat in or smelt a low/delivery milage 20+ year old car?

BUT if you fix the issues with the 100k car, you will be able to sell it for MUCH more than the comparable 200k turd .

People only buy leggy turdz because they are tight and / or they cannot find a lower mileage one.

Mileage matters , FACT ! :)

Agree with the zone legend PacerPete

Vehicle price depends on factors such as condition / spec / model
Condition often depends on mileage / owners / service history / rust / originality

So as mathematic equation
Vehicle price = f (model, spec, condition) = f (model, spec, mileage, owners, service history, rust, originality)

So forth low mileage increases the vehicle price
So does low owners
So does more comprehensive service history
So does no rust
Etc

F = means function of those variables

This seems to be the case.
I nearly purchased a car before Xmas and a kind zoner was going to help me.
As usuall when the word sport or Motorsport is mentioned
The owner has the Crown Jewels.
We didn't get anywhere and my offer was healthy in my eyes.
I think a nice clean, non kitted standard 325i has to be the way forward for me.If the opportunity arises.
Standard or chrome regular 325i with LSD is indeed lovely

Or save up and get a Sport !

If 25+yo delivery mileage chariots don't need tarting up, one wonders what you get paid to do all day :D

barry, let's be civil here. You're blowing all of my comments out of proportion, so playground banter is all I can manage with you.

Even a dry-stored delivery-mileage car NEEDS work done. Selling it as "mint interior, genuine 25 year old rubber timing belt and 1980s-spec engine oil" is not going to get the punters flo cking into the sales room. That's all I'm saying.

Yes, a low mileage perfectly-maintained model will command the highest price; I've never said it wouldn't. But if those models don't exist, or the buyer can't sell a kidney to afford one, then a higher-mileage-but-well-maintained car would be a better buy than a low mileage one of zero provenance, especially considering people clock cars as you yourself said.

EDIT: Why the hell is flo cking a banned word?

It descends into nonsense as the usual half wits either

a, cant comprehend as basic fact of life

b, think they patched up high mileage turds will be their pension

c, all of the above.

NO, your opening gambit was mileage weather 60k or 160k is irrelevant when that is simply not the case and its as this point that you and the usual suspects come up with all the other noise about history, condition, rust blah blah blah......

when the basic question of does mileage matter can be answered with one simple word. YES!

Yes, it looks silly if you don't quote the whole phrase. If you just pick and choose which words you want to read, we can't really discuss this rationally. What I said:
Grrrmachine wrote:I wouldn't let mileage put you off though - 60k or 160k is pretty much meaningless on a 25+ year old car. It's the fat wad of receipts for repair work (bushes, filters and fluids) that matter most.
Does a 60k car have any value if there's no paperwork to back it up? Or rather, does it have significantly more value than a higher-mileage car that's got plenty of receipts and service stamps?

This isn't a rhetorical question; if you think the lower-mileage car with no history is worth more, I'll take your word for it.

YES it does still have a value!

What you are saying is not true, that mileage is meaningless unless backed up by a fat wad of bills.

As long as you have the service book which is stamped up that is. Lot's of bills is nice BUT without them it does not render mileage meaningless.

The original service book is what matters most. FACT!

Barry, I don't want to be picky but a stamped-up service book IS a receipt for bushes, filters and fluids. Which means you and I agree here! :D

Then my apologies for not describing the original service book in the appropriate terminology. I've never seen one, you see :D

To bring this closer to a topic - I will admit to being clueless as to what E30s are selling for at the moment in the UK (Polish prices differ quite a bit). So what are the brackets these days? Can you get any form of 325i for less than a grand, or are those days long gone? And have cream puff Sports entered the 5-figure price band yet?
