Those of you who have removed the standard e30 tank and replaced it with an aftermarket alloy tank/fuel cell for your track cars
where have you placed it? im trying to work out where a good location will be without fudging up the cars weight distribution, i figured where the standard tank is seems quite good (low and quite central)...

so anyone with any experience in the matter, i'll be glad to hear from you

cheers. Nick

P.s, ive put this in this section which i figured was right as it applies to track cars?

Well DTM M3's have them in the boot, i think this is pretty common?

Depends on what you want to do and how tidy you want it, the OEM tank is heavy but the correct place is where its originally fitted. We had the OEM tank cut in half and welded back together and it worked well , but I had someone that knew what they're doing. Given the choice again I'd fit an ATL saver cell in the boot against the bulkhead, I can supply these if you want and also get some discount. You then have the confidence that it won't blow up as some ali ones can! The wheel well is too far back, i have one in the M3 and we've just taken it out for that very reason.

The reason that the DTM cars fitted their Fuel Cells into or around the rear spare wheel area in the Boot, was down to trying to achieve 50/50 weight distribution, for the overall balance of the car.

Some early DTM cars had the Fuel Cell sat in the spare wheel well, while others had Motorsport Fabricated Cells, located in the optium position for 'wet weight' or 'running weight' as sometimes referred to.

The Gorilla.

The best place is where they are originally located but the OEM tank is heavy, a bag tank is best but expect to pay over 2k, part of the reason why people fit boot tanks. The wheel well is too far back to make it easy to corner weight, so against the rear bulkhead is the best compromise.

Ours is around the spare wheel area, just behind what would be the back seats. Like Taffy says, probably down to weight distribution

Might be worth keeping it up out of the actual spare wheel hole, if you have the misforture to crash the car ass first into something solid there's not a lot of room for the wheel well to deform without squeezing and bursting a fuel cell. Anywhere on the boot floor should be safe enough though.

How about in the middle between the rear arches behind the sloped metal rear seat panel? I would put it there to put the weight down over the rear wheels and it's probably the safest place in a rear end shunt.

Thats where we put ours eventually, vapour sealing the rear bulkhead to comply with the regs was a real pain in the arse though, especially over the inner arches.
