It's possible, assuming you can locate another LCD, but easier to simply buy a complete replacement unit.

As above, the screen can be changed, but the only place you'll find one is in another OBC, so a bit pointless changing just the screen (unless, as in the case of one I came across, someone had decided to paint it body colour!)

Couldn't you have gently scraped the paint off, or used some sort of paint stripper/alcohol to remove it? It's only a thin plastic membrane usually, covering the actual glass of the LCD.

yes possible, however i prefer to repair stuff, there will come a day when replacements are no longer avialable, and time has marched on and spares to fix the units are NLA. better to replace screen with brand new part while still available.

In my opinion!

The plastic fascia of the OBC in question, not the screen, had been painted body colour, along with every other removable bit in the cabin.
I fully agree it's always better to repair stuff, and have now been doing so, at component level, for half a century, but new screens are not available and the rest of the OBC is usually reliable, so there's no point is stripping a good one to repair one with a faulty screen.

Do you have a dead screen available Brian? Possible an electrical spec as well?

This might be something I could source from China...

Hmm, Shame, If we could find out enough info on the current screen I am sure there is a standard part somewhere. After all it is only a simple multi pin LCD, I might have been able to wrangle someone in our China office to have a look for one direct from the factory.

Weren't these units made in Germany by Siemens or similar? Could be worth asking BMW Tradition HQ - someone there's sure to know the whereabouts of any possible replacements...
