They're alright IF you do the chain and bits first. Six pot ones have some expensive dramas. If I were to buy one I'd get that done first along with various gaskets and the crank sensor. It should then be reliable.

You're probably best off with a Skoda Octavia, a 1.9TDi with sensible miles. You can't really go wrong.

Why would you want an e46? because they're a lovely looking car in any colour, and in most specs. They also drive like a big e30, what is there not to like? beats me

Seems pointless trying to make 320d look like 335i / 335d
Very sad IMO

E92 335s are very quick and the power is available from low revs, shame about the HPFP issues.

Thats a very accurate EFA. 330/530d's and 335/535d's are perfect candidates to remap just a shame they leave a trail of soot and smell.

I would put my money on 6cyl petrols. There economical on the run. I like the 6cyl diesels but petrols are safer and sound better l.

E46 330i / Ci is a superb allrounder
I knew some of the vital stats by heart when I was 18
NA I6 3.0litre
231bhp
0-62 6.5 seconds
Top speed 155mph
Such a great all rounder
Looks super classy in well maintains OEM form
Just needs Quaife LSD to finish it off
7 star spoke alloys
At idle and low revs sounds like E46 M3 to me

I had an E46 330ci some years ago and have now got an E92 330i with the 272bhp N53 engine

Both great, but the E92 is noticeably quicker - it really is surprisingly quick for a 3.0 N/A engine. You do hear horror stories about the N53 engine though - touch wood, mine's been OK apart from one injector replacement. It's been recalled a fair few times though.

The N53 is a far superior engine to the previous N52 but having the latest injectors and coils is a must!

The E46 wasn't really an advance over the E36. Styling is subjective but they're heavier, don't steer as nicely, ride like a bastard and they're an absolute c.unt to work on. Ever tried removing an E46 wiper motor? F ucking nightmare. The lower headlight bolts that rust to buggery meaning you can't remove them. They fall between the lighter, simpler E36 and the much better and rust resistant E90. What's to like?

Each to their own. I hate the things.

Have you found out what ABS unit you have yet Bert?
No way! the steering feel on an e46 is fantastic, the e36 is numb and its quite hard to tell where you are when pushing on. Its an e36 problem. As for working on them, the e36 is easier but theres not really anything in it imo. I agree with the e46 cooling system design and the lack of jubilees wasn't a step forward imo. The rad/header tank design is awful.

I've washed my e36 and hoovered it but not pulled that unit out sorry. Andy have you a got e34 wiper racks still? My one on the M5 is buggered and its got Air con if that makes a difference. The clanking on the bonnet is upsetting me

The N53 used in the later 330i and 325i suffer from HPFP failure much more than the N54 used in the 335i.

Power delivery of the 335i in standard form is very linier to the point of feeling the same as an NA engine.

There is also little in it regards higher RPM.

E46 M3 would lunch all over E92 335i particularly wrt handling
The only things 335i has going for it are
Straight line performance
Torque
Remap performance
Really needs LSD
Understated looks next to E46 M3

M3 is more desireable. FACT.

Thanks for clearing that up Barry. I personally would pick the 335i over the 330i as most of the power is available right away... not really a fan of revving the motor to get it moving, generally you run out of road before most of the horses reveal themselves.

Would you say the N54 is better than N55? More tuneable along with having actual 2 turbos rather than twin scroll must be a plus. Would explain why 335iS and 1M continued to use N54.

Haha Pony... No one is denying E46 M3 is a beast and would out-handle a 335i however we are talking about normal street driving where straight line performance is all that matters, I sure wouldn't be turning corners at 30+mph

If I won the lottery today I would take a C63 over E92 M3 for its straight line hooliganism! :o: :o:

335iS? is that some US model?

The N54 was also used in the E89 Z4 Sdrive35i which the engine the 1M uses with the same power output.

The Ne F8x M3/M4 also continues to use twin turbo configuration and when Alpina developed there F3x B3 Biturbo, they went to the trouble of recasting the N55 block so a second oil feed/return so they could use a twin turbo set up as per the E9x B3 and B3S Bi turbo models.

Yeh 335iS was only released in USA unfortunately. It had N54 (with 320bhp) even when BMW started producing 335i with N55.

I guess Alpina had no choice other than to go with N55 for the new 3/4 series.

Well they did get the set up right on E9x therefore would make sense to do the same with new 3/4 series.

Many US companies attempted twin turbo set up on N55 in E9x but failed.

for tuning the twin turbo engine is much better than the later single turbo twin scroll job
