Hi all
I'm not getting any fuel! I tried strapping out the relay but no joy. Then I went from the plug 87 (pump feed) to earth with the meter and found 620k ohms would this sound like a blown fuel pump?
The car is a 91 M40.
Thanks Broadie

Assuming you measured the 620k across the pins of the pump, then that's a pump motor with a worn out commutator, rather than the more usual wear problem in the pump itself.
Have you tried connecting a 12 volt bulb to the pump plug with the relay strapped out? If it lights, but the pump doesn't run when you push the plug back onto it, then the pump is faulty. If the bulb doesn't light, check that fuse 11 (7.5A) isn't blown. Replace it temporarily with a 15A one if it is, until the pump has been replaced.
Thump the top of the pump frame hard with a large spanner, a long 1/2" socket extension, or a hammer handle when it's powered, and see if that brings it to life.

Thank you Brian
I had chuckle as I tapped it and the the car came to life!
Took the pump out it was now at 2 ohms took it down to my local Electro Diesel and it turns out they had exactly the same Bosch pump that looked like its been in stock for 20 years.
All soldered in now took about 3 hours with a 20mile drive. So it was a good day..
Many Thanks

Do you still have the old pump? The metal strap across the top of the pump retains the brushes, and if you prise this off, you can pull them out and see what condition they were in.
The life of the brushes tends to be greater than the commutator that they rub against, so shine a light down the holes and see if you can see holes in the copper.

Just pulled the pump apart.
The commutator had one section that had less than 0.5mm band of copper left on it . Brushes had loads left but scored.
I might have a go at draining the tank over Christmas, thought it would be spotless seeing it gets filled up every 2 weeks!
Brian I don't know how far you strip down pumps from breakers but I have the cap that the new pump came with if you want it for storing a pump?
