Whilst I'm not really an E60 fan, they are tough old buggers and they're less aggro than the late E39.

324'000. I'd say he had his money's worth from that. :D

A decent 2.0 M47 short engine won't cost much, or regrind the crank. The thing about the E60 is that whilst it has a few silly bits like the (optional)dynamic drive crap and the occasional steering lock fault (that can be cured with software), they don't have suspension issues, the ABS modules almost never fail and the auto boxes and diffs are okay. 535d's are amazingly tough for what they are. The N47 520d is worth avoiding unless it has a documented engine swap/repair as are the 545i's.

Yes very true the E60 is a much stronger car when it comes to mechanicals in terms of the driveline.

545i's are the old N62. They're alright but they can have issues with bore wear, oil leaks etc plus the infamous coolant tube seal but they seem to last okay in general. The later 550i is just a better unit but if you found a cheap 545i with a sweet engine, why not? They can't be far off £2500 now.

£2300 for a 324k 2.0 diesel with engine issues that sounds really expensive to me.

Yes it's mental. I'd give about half that for it, spend £6-700 sorting the engine and still have a 324'000 mile 520d. You;'d need to run it for 3-4 years to get your money's worth from it.
